Relic Hunting
random find at downtown party, guy asked me if i wanted to see something cool and was like sure, he knew nothing about me or my passion and from behind some wine bottles in the kitchen he pulls this out, and says "i found this in a field in wrens and thought it was to cool to leave there, somebody said it was made by the indians", my heart stopped because that and a full grooved axe are my dream artifacts, long story short i now own it and love it, enjoy 027.webp029.webp030.webp

Well I'm no expert, but here's my take on these stone "game balls". I believe they were formed by glacial pressure and grinding. We have found a few basketball sized ones over the years digging in creeks building bridges. I don't think there was any glacial activity in Florida.

Small ones are often found relic hunting, but I could never imagine playing with a stone ball, unless you were using it as a weapon. I know they are generally accepted as game balls, but I believe they could have come up with something better than a rock to play with.

I not trying to start an argument, but try taking a rock out in your yard and playing with it.:laughing7:

When I was a kid, all we played with were rocks sticks and a few bricks. We skipped them across water, threw them at larger rocks (we competed to see who could make the most sparks) and the most fun was Rock wars. Similar to paintball. I'm serious.

Here are my game stones......Also 2 chunky stones.... All from Missouri..

Did no one read my links? That is more than likely a Cannonball and not a Game Ball.

I thought you were kidding Reap. When were stone cannon balls used? I know that the old muskatoon was designed to shoot rocks or what ever was around. Were stone cannonballs hand made? I'm saying stone, is stone correct? Thanks Reap.

Yep stone. There is a guy on this forum called cannonball guy If he knows the dimensions he will tell you if it is a cannon ball or not. He is "The Cannon Ball Guy"!!!! Can you get exact dimension?

Well we all played with rocks, but how many did you shape and polish with hand tools, into a perfect sphere to throw at someone. I didn't mean they weren't picked up, brought back to camp and perhaps played with, I guess I'm just saying you can find them in any glacial till, and I believe that most were formed by glaciers.
My Uncle has a couple basketball size. I'll see if I can get a picture this week.

I posted this right after Reaper. 16th century round shot included stone. From grape shot to cannon balls.

Everything in that photo is ammo.

If you follow the links I put up it tells about stone Cannonballs.

Also.. sorry but this is a modern milling ball made of zirconia from a processing plant. Used for grinding things into a powder.

i knew there was something not right with you :laughing7:

Now that's a beauty- very cool.-----------------thanks for showing

So I guess you were the expert I talked to when he was looking at it then? I didnt think so. It does look like the tiny ones you posted but mine is made from quartz.

The ones I posted were the size of yours down to the size of a marble. I'm curious who told you that was quartz and how they could prove it was a gaming ball. Mabey its a quartz cannon ball. What info was used to determine its use? How was it determined to be quartz? What kind of expert "looked" at it. I'm not trying to piss you off. These are all very pertinent questions. .. If that can be proven to be a quartz gaming ball it would be almost unheard of. I was wondering if you could provide any info concerning this amazing find and the expert who determined its historical use. Sine you stated without doubt and "loudly" that an EXPERT gave you his OPINION... notice the word opinion?

That's funny... I don't know? Is it not normal to ask someone for info because the info you have leads to a different explanation? Or is that considered confronting? I got over 3000 posts in six months because I spent probably 2000 posts explaining every word I said to people who figured I was uninformed until I proved otherwise.

Gentlemen, settle it politely or put each other on ignore, we are not going to have this in the forums any longer.............
