Garnet? Or?

I've never seen a rock like this- although I'm also very new to rock hounding. The picture doesn't do much justice, the rock is actually very pink/ red- couldn't get the lighting right. The outside is waxy like and inside is coarse. What are your thoughts?
Also, I live in Connecticut- if that helps the identification

Don't think it's a Garnet or has Garnet in it.

Wow, great piece Tim! Yeah, mine doesn't have any reddish gems sticking out. It does have white, crystal like, ones though.

Mercury ore

After googling "mercury ore" it does look a lot like it..

Here in bc the garnet rock looks alot like that.
However garnet gemstone bearing rock looks alot different, almost metalic shist looking in layers often with caramel and white ribbons of layers throughout. But can be in a variety of colors like black ,beige , grey silver ect.
