Welcome to TNet groundslayer! Hmmmm...sounds like you're doing fairly well for the first time out. You generally get what you pay for, but a lot of good finds have been made with low-end detectors. It's more a matter of how well you know the machine and how well you use it instead of the machine itself. All things being even, if you get serious about it spend a minimum of ~$300...the Garrett Ace 250 is a good machine for a serious beginner. If money is no object, you can spend ALOT of money on detecting equipment which will help, but only if you take the time to learn how to use it effectively.

I'd love to see a pic of the ring you found (or a description...?) :)

You found coins and a ring on your first hunt!? And you wonder if this hobby is worth the money you spent? I'm not sure I'm getting it! ??? ???

Sounds like your off to a great start. I have a lot more expensive unit and not found a ring yet :-[. Some people dont stick with the hobby so its good your investment is low to see if you like it for a while. If your hooked I would say yes when your ready get the type of detector that fits your MD needs and budget. Get practice and experience with what you have, alot of great finds where made with detectors that where not top of the line.

Your doing all right my first time out all i found were bottle caps and pull tabs.Took a couple of day's before i found a coin.Keep at it,it gets alot better......rh

Hey Welcome Ground Slayer!

Moon, read it again carefully, he asking about the Lonestar Bounty as a detector not the hobby! Any detector will work for a begginer, no offense but you dont know the basics and thats what ur first detector will do for you. Goahead an learn the Bounty, True, many better detectors exist, but I know many people that can be lethal with a lower end detector and individuals with thousands invested and cant find their buthole. So, Bottom line, ur only as good as u want to be! The Ace is a great machine you can check out some vids on youtube on it under crackbadger! Take it easy and good luck with your choice!

Those are great finds for a first hunt and actually a above average hunt for anyone.
Cool Name also , groundslayer, I like that.

Your finds are in the good range. It's really not your machine at first, but where you hunt. Keep researching and hitting places where alot of people have congregated.

You will do fine!!!!

and individuals with thousands invested and cant find their buthole

:D ;D :D ;D that was funny.

Welcome to the hobby cant add much more than what others have said. Well done on your first outing coins and a ring the fun begin.

welcome to TN. I've been doing it for over 40 years and have other hobbies too. To me, this is the best way to relax and be rewarded at the same time. Its also a way for me to spend quality time with my daughter. by the time i get home at night i only get less than an hour with her before she goes to bed. We spend alot of hours on Saturdays going to parks, tot lots, beaches, etc and she loves it. Best of luck to you!!

one thing you need to remember, this is a hobby for most of us, we do it to relax. if your finding rings and things just starting out you're doing great, don't expect to have great finds everytime you go out, if you do you, will be disappointed
we have all had places we thought we be great, do to age, use, people concentration, etc. and they turned out kind of, ho hum, be keep working at it, because you never know what might pop out of the ground next. good luck and get back to dirt diggin.

groundslayer,

Welcome to the club! Your off to a great start with your finds. Spend time learning your detector and it will keep rewarding you with good finds. Yes, you did good on your choice of a BH Lonestar for your first detector. It's a good solid detector and the readouts will give you some experience figuring out what the detector is trying to tell you. Keep us posted on your hunts. Joe

Hello groundslayer. Welcome to the wonderful, wacky, joyous, frustrating, hairpulling, happy dancing hobby you could ever have got your self into. I can't talk about the bh lonestar but have heard is is an OK detector. Now if you made a mistake buying it really that can only be decided by you. I do know that if you stay with this hobby and learn everything about your detector that eventually you will want something else. I recommend if you do decide to buy another detector to check the forums ask others and see what they are using and finding. There are many great detectors out there and many great people using them. I made the mistake of not asking others about detectors when I decided to buy another one an bought 2 from an on line company based on the hype and advertisement they pushed for those detectors. I wasted 600 dollars to learn that I should have talked to people using the detectors not the ones selling them. I'm not saying there are not any honest dealers, but like anyone else the dealers want to sell you something for as much profit as possibly. Anyway that's my 2 cents worth. I hope you fall in love with this hobby as I have. HH Ted

I've only found one ring in the 25+ years I've been detecting and it was a stainless steel eating utensil someone homemade. sounds like you're on the fasttrack to good finds.

If your into this hobby thinking your gonna go out each time and get rich quick... Don't.... Go out with the attitude of having fun.. enjoy whats around ya..animals, water, birds, whatever.. have a good ole time...if ya find something.. then its a great day for ya...if ya didnt..well, least ya got out in the fresh air and enjoyed yourself..everyday is a learning exeperience even for those that been at it for years...so just enjoy... and things will happen..

Hi and welcome to Tnet. I started out with a BH 505. It was\is a great machine to learn with and a pretty good coin shooter. I think it is best to start with a low end detector to see if you enjoy the hobby. If you don't like it you don't have a lot of money invested. As others have said your doing good with it already. I haven't found a ring yet. :'( :D Give the hobby a chance. If you really end up not liking it you can give it away or sell it.

Good luck and keep us updated on how things are going. :)

I bought a bounty hunter sharp shooter2 for my first detector and it served me well. If you found some change and a ring that was a decent first hunt even if the ring was junk. You will find more once you learn more about your machine. If you like finding old relics and coins this is a great hobbie and worth the time and effort. I bag up all my newer change and count it at the end of the year. Sometimes you find enough of the newer stuff to buy yourself a new toy or something nice for the wife. All my silver and gold goes into a collection. Good luck in your future hunts.

Welcome to TNET. Have you heard that old saying, "A bad day Md'ing beats a great day of work anytime!" I guess its about the WHY you took up this hobby. I agree with many of my TNET buddies. It's the expectation of what I might find that keeps me in the hobby. Regarding a good machine I have an older model Whites Classic ID. It hasn't slowed me down one whit. Much of being "successful" with your machine are where you hunt, how well you know how to use the machine you purchased, and md'ing techniques. I have learned some awesome ideas and techniques on this forum. Happy hunting!

The machine is less important than the attitude. Success equals time spent searching. To find the good stuff = dig loads of trash.

Nope, you did not waste your money. You are now in one of the few hobbies that pays for itself.

Coins and a ring on your first hunt? Not too shabby. It only gets better. If you hunt on a regular basis, you will have hundreds of coins by years end. You can then use this new found wealth for more Metal Detecting (MD) toys. Pin pointer, beach scoop, headphones, batteries etc... Rock Tumbler to clean your clad coins.

You will probably be upgrading to another detector some time in the futrue and TNet is a great place to get all the information you might need to make an informed decision for your area.

Welcome to Tnet. Happy Hunting (HH)
