Found this today at a site that is on 1731 map, we got 6 coppers,so far one identified as 1787 CT copper..so kinda gives time frame. Its glass with assume copper wrapped around edge and feel it had to be attached to something larger, has letter A on left side of head and R on right, figure initials, but dont match ones on map, course could be different owner.Just wondered if anyone knew what its called or what it was a part of...thanks 001.webp005.webp***CORRECTION-map is dated back to 1763

Item is glass, the front is not flat but is rounded/raised slightly. The image is etched/carved into the back of the glass, tried putting drop of milk in it to take picture that way but didnt work to good, the glass on back has a bevel around the edge also, and a004 (2).webp006.webpgree with Charlie he must have had money,we found 6 old coppers..never found more than 1 or 2 at an old site usually.

I'm with ARRC. This is a serious piece. Not cameo to my eye. Aren't they usually carved from semi percious materials?

This could be the top of a momento mori ring - precursor the Victorian era mourning jewelry. Possibly reverse painted portrait under glass, also popular around the turn of the 19th C.

Here is one of George Washington made immediately following his death:

Whoever "A. R." was, he had money.

Is the piece etched or is it from a mold? I'd like to see a couple more hi-res pics. Your local historical society may be interested in this one.

When I fist looked at it I couldn't wrap my brain around if it could be in reverse looking through one way, and not the other..... but now that I no longer have to think about that, without question that is from a wax seal fob.

I do know one thing, that is one heck of a relic find and every time I visit this page it just draws you to the face of the person it depicts. I may be wrong but this is something that you do not see often and no matter who or what it is to me its one helluva find. I would put it in a shadow box with a light source illuminating the face .Its just one neat glass etching, vanzutphen
