Do you grid the area while detecting or just ramdomly detect ?I just wanted to know what everybody else is doing ...I just did a quick count of my top 75 older coins & relic finds & over 85% of my finds have been found from a grid style instead of random detecting! Just something to think about the next time you hit your favorite site.

I like to try to grid off sections and hit it thoroughly but alot of times I go all over the place it all depends how I feel

I grid a LOT ,even then I know I miss targets, the only random is in the woods. God Bless Chris

Unfortunately, I need to stay off the grid for a multitude of reasons. :laughing7:

So random works for me :tongue3:

Why wouldn't any body grid?

I try to mentally grid an area when the area permits...like a park. But most of my detecting is off the grid, in wooded areas with brush and such which make gridding difficult.
I went whole hog gridding a park one time that was virgin. Had drawn a park to scale with reference points so I knew what areas I hit and what I didn't. Quite an undertaking....but found many, many coins.Guess I was a bit obsessed with the idea.

I detect the hot spots. Gridding is a last resort method, unless you are an Archie. hand print-2_edited-5.webp I look near trees and rocks, near old porches, where old sheds once stood. The trick is to just stand there and visualize where people played or sat on the ground or had a picnic, etc. Look at it this way, if no one has ever crossed that field, nothing will be there.

Grid when ya can. Tire tracks from mowing or furrows in a turned field make it easy if you have them. Use survey flags and move them over as needed if I have to. In big fields that just checking for potential etc. Pick a tree or other reference then head to it . Move over 10 or 20 yards and repeat in the other direction. If start finding stuff tighten up a little but do whole field then come back to target rich areas and really hit hard overlapping slightly etc. In the wood you do the best ya can.

I don't "grid" much, unless I know a certain item is nearby (lost ring) and I am looking for that item. Otherwise, I look for those "draws" that attract people and concentrate there. Tree trunks, small hillsides, edges of parking lots, concession stands. TTC

Oh that, makes sence thanks I never thought of doing it like that before

Well I like the fact that a lot of folks don't grid. Means there will be a lot of targets left behind.

Have to grid around those apple trees :laughing7: Kayden

ticm, maybe the targets will be right behind!hand print-2_edited-5.webp

I grid most of the time. However, on a really hot day in a park I grind the shade areas only...8-)

I grid in front of resorts and heavy traffic hotels, on beach areas where no resorts or hotels on beach front I hunt the zones, water is first choice if I can get in, then surfline, wetsand and then towel line..... Now if a sudden thunderstorm goes up and everyone runs for cover I hunt the towel/ blanket line....

If I know I'm not going into the water I use my Sov GT with the SEF 15"x18" Butterfly coil and grid, I can cover a lot of area with that baby fairly quickly and it goes deep..... People say large coils want find small gold, but all my large coils have hit on very small gold with no problem, ...... I can understand when your talking nugget hunting, but at the beach I ahve had had no problems with any of my large coils seeing small gold.......

I use the circular oval wandering grid system....seems arbitrary, but very methodical. :laughing7:

That's what I like to do around big old trees. Works pretty good.
