Interesting article. Spoiler alert: Apparently "the ship was not designed for the compressive pack ice conditions that eventually sank it".
Double spoiler alert: Apparently, Shackleton knew it and wrote his wife about it. The article mentions financial and time constraints as possible reasons why he went ahead with the voyage. But in my reading of the article, the possibility of ego has to be included, as well.
