I went back to the site where I dug the colonial shoe buckle frame last week hoping to find some more goodies. There is so much iron at this site that I think targets are being masked. I must have pulled 50 lbs of iron out yesterday. I haven't found one button yet :dontknow:. I dug three lantern wicks and what I thought was just some round piece of junk, rang up in the pewter range. In the pouch it went. I hunted for 4 hours and that was all I came home with. Last night I started cleaning the pewter disc and it was slow going. Well today I picked at it some more when I started seeing what I thought was a shield, then a pillar, it was then I realized it was a Counterfeit 8. This is my second counterfeit 8 I've found and funny thing is they were found about 3 miles from one another. They must have been some counterfeiting folks back in the day around these parts. Hopefully everyone can see what I'm seeing on this coin, it's hard to see it straight on but when the glare is right it seems pretty obvious to me. The obverse is shot out worste than the reverse. Let me know what you people think
Thanks,

HB

Great Find!
Amazing how they counterfietted back in the days.
Found a couple also, one a lead Draped cent .(of 17 grams!)
They are some of my favorite coins

I see what you're seeing. Yes, there must have been counterfeiter somewhere nearby :laughing7:

Yep, that's a counterfeit 8!! :headbang:

When you get her toothpicked as much as you are interested in, mix some elmer's glue with water 50/50 (or a little more glue than water), and paint it on to the dry coin. This will keep it from flaking away, and it is 100% reversible (unlike urethane).

Well done, HB!

When in the same condition, and if made of silver, they are better. But those don't tend to be the ones we dig!

Very nice HB.
You're on a roll Dude!

Neat find Hill Billy, do you ever turn that detector off?

That is one strange looking counterfeit. I found what I thought was a counterfeit

half dollar the other day, you could see the eagles tail and the talon holding

the branch. It was all flaking off the cooper base. It was larger than a real

Bust half dollar by around 1/4". I don't know what was up with that.

Here's another one I found about 4 years ago at that hot spot I told you about. Now this

guy was a little better at his trade. Good luck and leave something for the rest of us.

yep, I see the crest and pillars. They have always had some enterprising folks up there in kentucky. :icon_pirat:

That's too weird. Hopefully you can find one of his pattern coins eventually. You are due for a real 8 reale.

I'll bet if HB offered to trade you his latest counterfeit for the one in your avatar, you may change your tune. :laughing9: That's one beautiful 8 Reale. I'd be happy finding either one.

It's definitely not silver and that's about all the cleaning I'm going to do. The residue on mine is dirt that has caked on like concrete, believe it or not I used a dental pick to scratch the crust off.

I concentrate on her every morning when I wake up, otherwise she might use that DB shotgun on me.
