I smell a FAKE altered date 1914 D (really a 1944 D) on ebay!

The seller sent me a message back telling me he was going to bring it to a coin store tomorrow to get a 2nd opinion, I think he will be ending the auction tomorrow.

Several months ago, the local coin store I've been going to (and know all the owners of) for over a decade had a 1944 S altered cent into a 1914 S. They had it marked for like 30$.

I pointed out the error to one of the workers, and he agreed with me.

Ended up selling the coin to me for 0.05 (the price they sell their wheats for)

It'll be used for teaching purposes only. Teaching some coin collectors about altered dates :)

MM is not even close to where it should be...
Well, it's exactly where it should be on a 44 but not a 14

Also, it's much higher of a strike. More raised, is what I'm trying to say.

He just replied saying he hopes I am wrong but he's going to get it checked out.
Based on his history, I don't think he is dishonest, just unaware. We shall see

There is still that chance the person that listed it didn't even know, or missed it. :dontknow:
Yea..he just told me he bought it off ebay so he might have gotten burned

Doubt it will happen.

I just logged in there, and the listing remains posted. If I were an honest seller, and had a suspect listing, I'd pull it back until I knew the truth.

I agree absolutely, it is an altered '44....

Here's another posting of what appears to be the real deal - the spacing is correct.

Totally agree Kemper. He probably figures if he got skunked on eBay he will try to recoup his money and try to get it back instead of biting the bullet and being an honest seller and using this as a lesson learned

Browsing the sold listings, he's got a very good chance of getting rid of it.
More than one has sold for a pretty penny recently. That's e-bay

1914 D 1c Lincoln Cent Wheat Penny Nice Toning No Reserves Key Date | eBay

another went for like $175

And that is a bad looking coin in my opinion!! There might be a fine line with these. What if you had one and didn't know and listed it! The pics show everything. Then the person buys, not knowing what they are buying!

Well it looks like he ended the auction, I don't feel he was dishonest just didn't know.
