Had a quick hunt today. The dirt was brick-city so I went to the spot with the most shade. Still like brick but got an Indian 19xx and eventually another 1892. Then I got a signal that did not repeat at any other angle, but it sounded real nice. What popped out is a coin so nice I wouldn't believe it was dug unless I unearthed it myself .

Nice one for sure.

That's what shocked me- virtually no toning. The way it looks in the pic is after a cleaning with water, only. No soap, citric acid, etc...

Less is more;)

Unbelievable! Congratz Scrappy! Great find!!! :hello2:

Sweet!!

You hit a home run with this one, the barber is AWESOME!!

Happy for you, my good man!

that girl is too da^ned clean. send her to me and I'll leave her in the road to get gnarly. I'll send you a nice 2015 clad dime in exchange.

Very nice find!!! Your story explains the condition though, along with the 2 toasty IH's. You said you dug in the shade of a tree, I've seen the same thing under oaks, the silver is nice and clean but the coppers are corroded to a bad degree all due to the tannic acids emitted by the oak trees by acorns and leaves dropping on the ground over the years, both of which contain tannic acid. Tannic acid is soluble in water, so the rains strip it from the leaves and acorns and it filters through the ground causing the effect on the coins residing in the earth there. Seems to keep silver clean while it destroys the copper.
Anyways, great find, and hope to see you posting more like that! Cheers!!

That's pretty interesting. I never thought of the acids involved. The spot wasn't under the tree, but the nearby shade tree (60' or so) was a couple hundred years old so I'm sure it leached it's way over there through the years. All three finds were within a 20 sq ft area so that makes me think the soil content was very similar.

Thanks for the insight!

Steve

That's a beautiful coin. So rare to find them that nice, but when they do happen, it's amazing.

Congrats!
