Just getting into metal detecting

Hi im Peter and im just getting into metal detecting. I live in lynchburg va and would like tips and possible locations to start hunting

1. Have you decided on what type of detecting you would like to do?

Example: Play grounds, parks, cellar holes, civil war, water, beach, not sure.

2. Have you bought a detector yet?

If you have. What did get?

Then the readership might be able to guide you better.

Welcome. Virginia is rich in both Civil War artifacts as well as iron mineralization in the soil. Your best bet is meeting up with nearby metal detecting clubs who can best advise how to obtain permissions as well as suitable detector to handle the soils there. With your budget your best deal may be with a used detector.

Historical/certain park systems everywhere are off limits for detecting.
But there's unlimited amount of spaces to wonder around in.
Just remember if it's not public then it's private-If it's private then ask permission.

Learn on your own lawn how to dig a proper plug before going to a public park to dig.
Remember if you dig it-remove it.
$250 is in lower/mid range detector unit-but it's a good introduction to the hobby.

View some of the vendors that are on the forum as they van guild you through the types of detectors that would fit your budget.
Please don't buy a Chinese made detector off the internet=disappointment from the get go.

I made this mistake when I first started. Do not make this mistake. You think you are getting a good deal, but you are not. The first detector I ever bought was a Chinese brand, and cheap. It could only detect a few inches deep, and only iron at that. I tested it on gold jewelry point blank, and it did not even pick it up. If possible, I'd recommend you get a detector in the $400-$600 range to start, but if your budget is tight, that's understandable. You'd get your money's worth, and more if you go out frequently.

Reasearch is the key ,.you wont find it if it isn't there....reasearch will guide you to the right detector. ..you will dig alot of junk so dispose properly and always cover your holes..don't give up , if you've done your reasearch you will succeed......have fun...

Welcome aboard. Your first step into metal detecting is well done.👍
The advice, given by @Digger54 , is really good. Try connect to a local club. Maybe someone will get rid of one of it's herd.🤭
But you will be helped to do your MDing.
For your budget you may be able to get a used, well detecting machine.

A lot of years ago, I lived in Northern Virginia around the Manassas battle field area. I had some luck at a few construction sites. I obtained permission from the job site supervisor and would hunt after hours and on the weekends when there was no activity going on. I got a few nice civil war relics. Hope this helps you get started. Good luck!

Make sure you have a decent metal detector to start with.(Not a junker clunker)
