I've been collecting Florida points for 50+ years and never heard of that. Admittedly I almost always looked alone not with anyone so no one to hear names from. A lot of snorkeling in the springs back in the late 70's into the 80's. Personally I don't see Kirks transitioning into Newnan types. They are pretty different and distinct shapes. Also Kirks are widespread across the Eastern US while Newnans are local to Florida and a few in Georgia. Just my take on it, I'm by no means an expert.
Well, I apologize if you're living in a different part of the world and have not recognized these points yet. They are currently named Palmer nevertheless , we have been calling them newkirks been finding them throughout the Ocklawaha valley all the way to the head in Lake Apopka. They just wanted to name them after Howard , as if he would been the first one that had ever discovered them when finding him for 25 to 30 a very well known and recognized point in Central Florida , Newkirk unless you want to call them a Palmer, which is quite ridiculous. That's like calling the Hendricks , Scraper , a Purdy scraper after Barbara A. Purdy. So you don't dig in the same trenches with everybody else doesn't mean that they're not there as this one is supposed here. I would , I was glad to clarify that for you. Hope you take the expanded wisdom of evolving Florida

That was his first post, and his only post he’s made are within this thread. Just seemed odd all around as well as the age of this thread being 2 years old.
Nothing wrong with it, just odd.
I'm really sorry you guys are confused and out of the loop just because someone brings you new information isn't discredited by a person that has already been collecting since the age of 10 Have over 50 years under my belt. Where have you been. Yo neople's squabble and argue, like something is atrociously wrong instead of being open-minded to new discoveries. That sounds like Ben Waller telling me about call up Ripley P. Bullen and telling him that he found Clovis points inside of a Mastodon at Silver River and then begging him for close to a year to come investigate, only to be told.I'm not coming. There were never paleo indians in Florida lol 😆😂🤭😃😀

No one is confused. I'm a Florida native older than you and have been collecting most of my life. If you have a pet name you want to call a certain point that is fine, go for it.

You're completely out of touch. If you have a pet name, then you should pet your pet. We're talking about real experiences from the field. The current name in use is the Palmer point. Just because he found two major caches of coral Pasco points, we've been calling them Newkirk for 40 years now. It's like having the names Pasco or Cypress Creek; just because it doesn't align with your current concept. doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Oh, that's right, it's not in Ripley. Pierce Bullen, the Curator Emeritus at the Florida Museum of Natural History, wrote a book on this. So, are you saying that the Pasco, Cypress Creek, and Newkirk, which are not mentioned there, do not exist? I don't know, it seems like some semi-amateur archaeologists have not kept pace with the times. I'm sorry, but you're too disconnected from the current developments in Central Florida archaeology to truly grasp what's happening. A pet name? I wonder who came up with that ridiculous notion 🤔 💭

Whatever big guy, I think in this case being me "out of touch" is just fine.

I find it quite baffling where your confusion stems from. You've made numerous incorrect assertions. I am not the individual who labeled the point as Palmer. If you wish to reach out to the person responsible, here are the details:

(Removed by mod for posting personal information of non member.)

Please keep your self-pity and neglect away from me. If the topic is unclear to you, it may be prudent to take a step back and remain quiet for a bit. I will continue to refer to it as Newkirk, regardless of whether the big guy prefers name it after Howard or not. If you have an issue with him, don’t hesitate to reach out or take a moment to think. You might actually gain some insight. All the unnecessary arguments you've presented have only underscored your lack of understanding and your failure to grasp a concept that has likely been around longer than you. I could respond foolishly like you, but I will opt to take the high road this time. You've already created enough of a mess without my help, and you still haven't added anything of value, just a lot of fussing, dancing, and sarcastic rhetoric about a subject you don't genuinely comprehend.

Let's be clear here. I have no idea what your talking about. I've made zero "assertions" about anything and am baffled by your vitriol. I've never mentioned a Palmer. Your attitude is noted and not appreciated.

Born and raised in Florida, collecting artifacts since '82, never once heard of "NewKirk", nor is it found in Overstreet, any Lar Holthum books or artifact guides I have.

That's more like a Newkirk
Question: Kirk is a type of projectile point, is there such a thing as a Newkirk

No, there is no such thing as a "Newkirk" arrowhead in North American archaeology.

While the Kirk projectile point is a highly recognized, valid typological cluster from the Early to Middle Archaic periods, "Newkirk" is not an officially recognized variant or type.

The "Kirk" point was officially named by pioneering archaeologist Joffre L. Coe in 1964. It was named after the Kirk family, who owned the land at the famous Hardaway Site in Stanly County, North Carolina, where the points were heavily documented

Instead of a "Newkirk," the actual recognized variations within the Kirk Cluster include:
  • Kirk Corner-Notched: Known for a large triangular blade, deep corner notches, and often finely serrated edges.
  • Kirk Stemmed: Features a distinct, broad, straight stem and a medium-to-large triangular body.
  • Kirk Serrated: Primarily differentiated by its deep, pronounced, and highly intentional edge serrations.

I am uncertain about the reasons behind your agitation or the issues you are facing, but if you lack constructive feedback regarding the article and prefer to engage in name-calling and spreading misinformation, this may not be the right environment for you. If your intention is not to learn and you have no valuable contributions to make, perhaps it would be best for you to adopt a read-only approach. I am quite weary of your sarcastic remarks and your apparent failure to grasp the subject matter, which has led to numerous inaccuracies regarding the current situation.I have already mentioned the prominent individual's name, and if you cannot move past that, I kindly ask you to refrain from engaging with me. Please, take a moment to sit quietly and read to enhance your understanding instead of pretending to possess insight when it is evident that you are confused about basic concepts, such as the difference between a daylight dig and a night dig. It is perplexing to witness individuals who do not comprehend their own statements, resorting to insults without contributing anything relevant to the discussion. Sometimes, it is necessary to recognize when to concede, especially when you are unable to achieve your goals. What exactly are you attempting to demonstrate, aside from exhibiting narcissism and frustration with yourself? It seems you are unaware of your lack of knowledge yet continue to persist. I encourage you to seek out educational resources. I have provided you with the relevant website; please utilize it. I have clearly requested that you keep your distance from me. If you cannot offer any constructive insights, you are merely dragging yourself down, and I refuse to accompany you in that endeavor. You have not made any valid arguments; it is clear that you have lost.
