Sorry if this question is too basic for you, but....how can a distance be longer than a Nautical mile and also be shorter than a standard mile, when in FACT... a Nautical mile is actually longer than a standard mile?

Great question ... the reason is the Nautical Mile is based on sea level ,a straight line and the question was could I read the symbolic and it was directed to a land fix .. in a steep mountain range so over distance traveled is in fact longer and funny thing is nether NM or standard were used till much latter ...and yes the standard mile is 86.9 % of a NM ... if you go out to the mountains and mark off one mile and then walk as the crow flies you under stand real fast what I am talking about .. but yes a great question ...what's funny is those that used this type of navigation felt it funny that anyone could use one set distance over all types of land ...because the terrain was so rough in some place it took weeks to cover what would have taken days in other area , so visuals land marks and relationship to each vs comparing became the normal development for them till the new type started to show up and they were converted by logical teaching of the times .
your so funny hahahaha . no that was what I was saying that there was no fixed set Mile distance ,and their Unit value changed from map to map and we still to day use a set distance to the mile because of this confusion between one map and the next and from one persons skills to next . the new standard with a set map scale made their navigation obsolete ....but I agree with you its funny they had no map scale to judge distance ,but yet in many ways as smart as we are now days and all using a set map scale have a problems reading there types of maps ...Is a second level triangulation mile
