Metal detecting sidewalk in an 1820s town

They just tore up a sidewalk along side the buildings that were initally burned down by the union here in SE la.. Any pointers for hitting the sidewalk? This is my 1st time

I just picked up my son from school, by the time we were coming home to gear up they had already laid about 10ft of dirt.... Completely hurt and fuming right now!!!!.. Here's what I missed!!! Read about ponchatoula la during the civil war... Damn it!!!
