Yeah, that's a very good error! From what I can see in the picture I'm guessing it's a struck through capped die error. There's a chance it was struck through very heavy grease ~ if so, this would be the most extreme case of that that I've ever seen! But I put my money on struck through a late stage capped die.

This error type happens when a coin being struck adheres to the obverse die ~ then other coins are being struck through the "stuck" coin on the obverse die. The first few strike make a very rare error called "mirror brockage" ~ it's an incused image of the stuck coin ~ but then after a several strikes the stuck coin's images start to distort ~ then the images just go away from being struck through several coins. Your coin is one that was several strikes after the initial "stuck" coin adhered to the obverse die.

Here's the address to my error coin webpage ~ http://community.webtv.net/oddcoins/NeilMcElroyspagefor

Nice find!

Here's a similar error that I bought off of eBay a feww weekd ago ~ it was in a lot of other coins (not all error coins). This is a Jefferson nickel Late Stage Capped die strike . . AKA Struck through a late stage capped die. This one is a late enough stage that you can actually make out some design elements of the obverse, while the reverse is perfectly fine ~ the date is 1981-P.

Do you have any idea how much it is worth?
Cool nickel!

Error coin prices are tricky ~ there's no set prices on error coins like there are for regular collector coins. The best place to sell them are on eBay. But this month is probably the worst month to sell on eBay. I'd wait to sell anything on eBay until after the new year.

I estimate it would sell for $10 to $20 . . . . maybe?!

Thanks for the information again.
I'm not looking to sell the coin. I was just wondering what they went for.
By the way. That is a nice collection you have on your web page!.
