its funny that you said that about the "crusties". i was browsing all of the sellers and began to notice most have some detail already visable, making them "picked through". i noticed some that were crusty looking and totally hidden. so i typed in crusty and found about 4 listings. then i read your reply about 5 min later, kinda wierd. another question. i was looking at different sites on cleaning and it seems i will have to wait a long time for the coins to get cleaned with out damage. what is your favorite process, oil, water, electro? and with your process about how long until your coin was finished? i read one guy uses straight rug doctor cleaner, and is amazed by its speed and working power, and it keeps its patina.

ya i think the Lysimachos Drachm coin turned out nice, actually was very nice to begin with. out of your coins my fav is the silver forgery, and that short story that went with it. i appreciate your time on the subject and if you dont mind, if can share my finds with you when i get them and get your opinions. i think your collection got me interested in these. i was into large cents, maybe ill get hooked on these now

Of course you can . I'd love to see your finds. Yes, I still have that forgery Trajan Denarius. I picked that up some time ago. One thing you'll notice is you can get an ancient forgery much cheaper than the "real thing". I think you'll find ancients much more interesting than large cents...the variety of ancients out there is huge!

wow, i think this is my favorite one of them all, i have never seen one like this. quick question. the ric vii antioch 78 and the campgate ric vii nicomedia 153 (hope i wrote those right) both have a castle wall or something on them, what is it? wow typing those is like a math equation... im used to MS60 VF40 AG exct

They are campgate coins.....The Romans (of course) had emcampments when they were on their conquests.....These coins simply show the common-folk that these particular emperors participated in such events...nothing more than propaganda.......camgates are very popular however.......I am glad you enjoyed seeing them..these are among the rare types ..

Probably Orichalcum. See my personal message to you. If Orichalcum, I'd guess that to be a Quadrans or Semis from early imperial times...let me know what it is when you get the crust off .

ok, lets start with what i have learned the last few days. for starters, you never told me NOT to slap a crusty on the cement..... my whole coin is now 7 bits. lol, to get that out of the way. ok, now i have also found out that i will never use a exacto knife or sharp metal objest to pic the crusties away. i gouged a coin 4 times, one deep scrape too. electric method, we wont even go there. the best way i have found and everyone told me is patience. i soak them all day and spend about 5 minutes each night with a brass brush, and im slowly seeing results, letter by letter, design by design they are turning out great. i am currently using rug doctor and will be trying a batch with olive oil next. that one i showed you that i "nicked" is showing detail since last night, i give it maybe a week more. there was a gouge, large scrape when i recieved it, so far it seems it was only in the crust this is the coolest thing ever. now i have to figure how to get them identified, wow its alot of work, ALOT. here is a picture of my first cleaned coin, the one i was impatient with and picked at. The reverse is decent and the obverse has some corrosion, it still needs to clean a little more. so far i think i got- byzantine, justin I 527 ad. I found a few online. it is my largest of them all. i was trying to find the mint, but had no luck, most i saw were made at constantinople mint. if you have a better idea about this one let me know. Thanks again for turning us onto this.
p.s. my wife no longer likes these, all she hears throughout the house, is brush brush brush brush

here is that one i questions about being gold, that got nicked during a fall , it still has a long way to go, the gold color is from my brass brush. Im guessing by photos i have seen this may be a Marcus Aurelius coin?

Picture is of Caracalla I believe. Will need to research to ID this one. Provincials are more difficult for me to identify as the legends tend to be in Greek.


P.S. Feel free to use this thread for ID help. I am NEVER irritated when helping folks identify their ancient coins...I actually kinda live for it

hey gunner, how often do you find buttons? if you remember i bought a crusty lot awhile back. now one is starting to clean up well, it has a "lump" like maybe a shank covered with crud on one side and the other seems to be smooth with a hole almost centered. i have not found any designs on it yet. the edge is slightly curved with the hole side. is this a rare find or pretty common?
