Went out for a last minute afternoon hunt yesterday to a field near where I got a silver colonial cufflink last weekend. Nice sunny day, not too hot, a little windy but overall very nice weather.

First two keepers were the musket balls.

Then came a silver 3 cent piece! It was really corroded at first... no detail. I washed it a bit and saw the (III) and immediately put it in my medicine bottle for safe keeping! 1852, with a hole in the "18". Extremely pleased with that-- don't see many of these found.

A little over an hour later came my favorite find, which took that title from the 3 center very quickly.

a 1831 capped bust half dime! There still seems to be a lot of detail on it.

A few other unknowns (not sure if one is a token or a button with no obvious shank)

Very, very excited with these finds

Don't see Cap Bust Half Dimes very often too.
Great digging !!
Keep @ it and HH !!

Very nice coins indeed ! The cappy is spectacular !!! and the "trime" aint exactly chopped liver either !

EXCELLENT duo! WTG!

Kinda wish people hadn't put holes in coins though. I know, it was supposed to help them to keep from losing them, right? Worked, didn't it. ;)

HH!

I found a 3 cent pc the other day mine does not look like that one , mine was a 1865. That was a good haul keep on digging HH.:hello2:

Awesome finds there.way to go

Thats a great day in my book! Awesome finds HH

Totally love the color of the 1831 in pics 4 & 5 as a numismatist, pics 2 & 3 not so much, you clean it ? And how anyone finds a 3 cent silver is mind boggling as they are so small, super congrats on that, must take super concentration, hmm perhaps I will get a cull to plant in a test garden :-O

Probably, you found a nickle three cent piece.

Maybe, "as a numismatist", you don't like the possibility that someone else has taken the shameful privilege of making their OWN found coin, for their OWN collection, a little more presentable for their OWN selves. ;) Don't try to shame them for doing something you would never, never, never, never, do. ;) Just concentrate on getting as good as they are in finding them. LOL

Oh and about finding them? Yep, it's almost a mistake. They are TINY!! AND, thin!! I've been fortunate enough to find one of each type. But, besides listening carefully to what the detector is saying, there wasn't much "skill" in my finding them. :)

HH!

Sweeet-finds there! Don't think either of those old coins can be found even out here =)

great for the dug type set :P

I only cleaned the half dime with water. The color variation is due to the flash... the color in person is closer to the dark pictures (the ones you like). The flash makes it look greener

The first pic (all finds) was taken inside and the others were outside (on my grill cover... haha)

The 3 center was only a few inches down and I dig everything above iron in spots with high potential. This spot was 'hunted out' by many people, including some for over 15 years!

Also, the 3 center was so corroded, I cleaned it with tooth paste (gently) so that I could at least see more than just the III.

Thanks everyone! I hope these are not once in a lifetime for me, but even if they are, I am happy to have found at least one!

I sell gold jewelry, but all relics and coins I keep... so I may or may not clean the half dime at some point. If I do, it will be only so much that it still keeps a tarnish, etc.
