Detector(s) used
White's M6 w/ Sunray Probe & a Bounty Hunter Lone Star
Now, this is months after the fact, but I just got my scanner working, and got some very nice scans of the coin in :)

I got my first detector for my birthday last Sept; just a cheapy Lone Star with the Radio Shack brand stamped on it. Took right to it, hitting a local park for practice in pin-pointing and digging plugs, and finding change every trip ;D. Currently attending a local college, so I decide to keep my detector and digging knife in my trunk in case i get the urge to hunt between classes.

Fast forward a bit to a Wednesday in the middle of that October. I'd just gotten out of my Calc class and had 3 hours to waste until my next class. Remembering a park that I passed every trip to school, I decide to head on down there to see what I can find. Park's pretty empty, and the hits were few and far between. First target dug was a soda can. Second was a Memorial. Third was another can. Fourth was another Memorial. Fed up with that stretch, I walk across the playground, and start a row near a trashcan. As I approach it, I get a signal for a coin (the Lone Star doesn't give depth, nor does it discriminate between pennies, dimes, quarters, etc) I begin to dig, and get down to about 8" when I notice the coin in the dirt I just loosened.

Picking it up, I realize that the coin is smaller than a dime, thinner too. Flicking some of the dirt off ( :BangHead: ) I see the words "Half Dime" appear (just meant it was old to me at the time). Wiping more of the dirt off ( :BangHead: :BangHead: :BangHead: ) I see the date appear... and nearly go into shock. My first silver coin was an 1853 arrows half dime. In the middle of a 20 year old park... I imagine either some very sorry coin collector happened to lose it while passing through, or somehow it came with dirt used to level the park when it was built. None of that mattered though ;D And months after the fact I can still remember the date, the time, the place, the diggings, everything that happened for several hours before and after the find . This is the coin that hooked me for life!

Thats awesome!!!!! The oldest nickel I have found is from 1919...
Great hunt, glad you posted the pic.

Well hey!!!! Congrats on the seated half dime!!!! I really doubt it was a coin collectors loss!!! Chances are there was either something there before that park or it was fill that was brought in from another site where something was!!! I'm leaning towards fill that was brought in!!!! Thats a sweet coin though where every you find it! keep hitting that park, who knows you might get lucky again!!! Good luck! QUICKSILVER(appletree)

I had a similar experience in the yard of my suburban mid- 1960's home, which is how I got hooked. My first was not quite as old, a 1939 quarter followed by four or 5 silver coins from the sames era. Then the kicker came a little while later when I dug a crotal bell from the 1850-1900 era!

Keep in mind that there was always something there before. IN my case it is a farm going back to the 1700's.
