My first "V" nickel!

It was pure joy to go detecting after missing out for a week.
I had hopes of finding some bling, i did...sort of. :sly:
First find of the day, a bejewled starfish...on dry land! I believe it is a sew on ornament, has 4 holes, no loop or post and the # 2138 on the back.

The 1925 wheat read as a quarter, i chalk that up to a hard time ground balancing. The orange paw bead is a plastic surface find.

I finally found a spot where i could ground balance, that seemed to bring out the quarters, dimes and nickels for a clad fest!!! ;)
I thought one of those nickels felt a little "off". :what: I didn't know how "off" till i later cleaned it at home. My first "V" nickel!!! ....unreadable date...of course! :banghead:

Even one of the zincs came out sporting its own rootball! I thought it was a piece of tin foil for a while! :what:

This sports field is full of all sorts of surprises! Tons of trash, abundant clad, gold ring, silver rings, wheats, Rosie, musket ball, V nickel, car parts. Finding the kitchen sink here would not surprise me....may need a larger trash pouch!

Can anyone make out the date on my toasted V?
.....i may have to post pics in a second post...it tells me i'm not logged in :what::(:banghead:

Very nice, Ms........
Now that you've broken the ice with the first, many more are sure to follow!!

Awesome Jeff!!! Yes we will!.... and with about 20 other people! :D

Can- Thanks!

Lowcountry- Thank you !

McCDig- Thank you! Ya, i had the 25' wheat ring up in the 80's as a quarter in dry ground, kinda weird. :what:

Issac- It only took me 25 years to find this toasted beauty! Lol!
Now people are finding them right & left! The flood gates are wide open! :D

Chizzy- Thanks! It sure seems to be the year of the "V"!
If Jeff & I are finding them, somebody must be just flinging them out the car window as they drive by! :D

great job! I just found my first last night too!

Congrats! I just found my first one too a few weeks ago! And 1889

Sir Walter R.- Congrats! Welcome to the club! Seems to be very popular right now!

Fletch- Congrats to you also! The "V" club is growing by leaps and bounds!

So my theory of someone driving around flinging handfulls of "V's" out the car window.....might be valid!!! :D

winston churchill.webp

Winston and I approve. I have yet to dig one, so it is still on the bucket list. Congrats MSBB! Sub :laughing7:

Thanks! To you & Winston! Lol! This seems to be the year to dig one! They're popping up all over! Hope you find yours!
Jeff G got one.

tell me about this ketchup trick

tell me about this ketchup trick

No trick. The ketchup has acids in it. But, I've soaked a few old nickles in it before and had "some" success. That's all.
Takes a while depending on condition.

Congrats on your first V nickel!

Big congrats! I have only found one "V" myself, few and far between in my area.

I tried it a little on the back, it kinda worked a little, maybe i didn't leave it on long enough.

I'm afraid i'll remove too much, I know it's silly cause mine is so
toasted, but i chickened out and have it soaking in minetal oil...i was afraid of using olive oil, lol!

You'd think i was trying to clean a rare artifact or something! Lol!

Thanks Dave!

Thanks gaela4!
I couldn't tell what it was when i found it just that the size and weight was off for a normal nickel. It was a dull red like a lot of the quartets i find. The detector knew more about it that i did!
There seems to be a lot of V's being found now. :what:

Not at all! My first suggestion on ANYone's *first* find of any type would be, if you can tell what it is, LEAVE IT ALONE!
At least now, you KNOW what it is and it's apparent! Trying to show someone, later on, a corroded slug and trying to convince them of what it USED to be, well. nuff said.

It IS a RARE artifact! It is YOUR first!!

One hint, can you actually see the word CENTS on the bottom, under the "V". If not, it might be the first one.

Make it as pretty as you wish and then seal it for display! Best to stop further corrosion. :)

I will have to take a closer look when i next pull it out of its mineral oil beauty bath!
The V & wreath were barely distinguishable so i'm not sure whats still there. It's had a hard knock life. :D

Those are my favorite coin type that I like to find. Those v's let me know that some old jewelry may lurk nearby.

I hope you find more v's and more goodies.

Thanks! I'm thinking the silver ring i pulled out of tbere may be older than i thought.
I pulled a musket ball out of here also. Anything is possible!
