My oldest silver in a long time.

Rehunted an 1850s farmstead site today and found these. I pretty much dig everything that isn’t obvious deep iron or a pop can overload. Thought it was apiece of a tab top at first but upon brushing it off I saw it was round. A shocker when I saw it was a silver coin.

I learn something from this site on a regular basis; I don't believe that Spanish silver was a regular coinage this far north (IN/IL/MI). Nice finds.

You couldn’t be more wrong. Spanish silver and gold coins were honored and used virtually everywhere in the world. They were used in the US until 1857. It took the US mint 60 yrs to make enough coinage to satisfy the demands of our country. Oldrvrrat57 posted a dozen Spanish coins he detected in IL a week or two ago. Eviva Espana!

The large cent cleaned up nice in the rock tumbler.
