Found this button at a local Fort. First fort West of the Mississippi. This is a first also for this type of button. I have a copy of the button from a button book and it appears to be either 181A or 181C. There is a bit of gold gilt still on the button. I know it dates from probably 1805 until about 1825, that is the time period this for was occupied. However, I do not have the actual description of the button so do not know the actual dates, or if it an Officers button, enlisted button etc. Just have the picture and 181 number. Any information would be very helpful.

Outstanding find! Looks like a c. 1812-15 Infantry officer's button. Is that a second "I" ( "II," 2nd Regiment) after "U.S."? Any backmark?
