NEVER THOUGHT I'D DIG ONE IN DENVER

Went back to the site that I dug the baggage claims, could hardly recognize it. They have been moving literally tons of dirt, and it didn't look too promising. The first hit was a beautiful pull tab, thought about cleaning, but didn't want to hurt the value in any way. (Any tips on cleaning would be appreciated) Next was a nice Merc, a 1944-D. Started to get a little frustrated. I'd dig a zinc penny in an area that had been dug down ten feet or so, then see a nice old glass fragment on the surface. There was really no methodical way to detect, just hit or miss. After an hour of walking around aimlessly, I got a fluctuating "zinc penny-penny dime" signal on the Whites, and looked down at the ground. A small round silver object was lying on the surface. At first I thought that it was a religious medallion, it was so tiny. Then I saw the eagle! Could have seen my happy dance from Google Earth! It's my first Capped Bust anything, something that is pretty unusual to find out here in Denver. It wasn't even on my wish list, the only way I thought I'd ever dig one was to go back east and hunt. Happy, happy, Carl!

Re: NEVER THOUGHT I'D DIG ONE IN DENVER

Thanks for the help on the pull tab, and the rest. Thought about sending it in to be slabbed, but going to the post office, insurance, yada, yada. Decided to just frame it in a Riker case, and enter it in the Finds of the Month contest at my detecting club. As long as no one digs up a coveted "bottle cap", or even better a zinc, I'll do well. You people in Utah have all those crazy looking private gold coins, that's what I want!

Gorgeous Merc CDC, and that capped bust is a superb find!! Congrats!!

Keep hitting it until they chase you out with the bulldozers!!

Re: NEVER THOUGHT I'D DIG ONE IN DENVER

Dude...that pulltab is awesome!!!

Re: NEVER THOUGHT I'D DIG ONE IN DENVER

That's one heck of a pulltab. I see it is the J13 variety. That needs to be sent off to get slabbed pronto. I'm STILL waiting for my first pulltab! Nice finds!

Joe.

Re: NEVER THOUGHT I'D DIG ONE IN DENVER

Great pull tab. Have it silver plated.

Re: NEVER THOUGHT I'D DIG ONE IN DENVER

Very nice finds!

Re: NEVER THOUGHT I'D DIG ONE IN DENVER

First off--HOLY COW! Incredible find for your area! Savor this one, because it is unlikely to be repeated.

Second--FOLKS, this is a Half Dime. There were no "Nickels" until it got to expensive to make 5c coins in silver--and the Shield "Nickel" was born.

::)

Good Grief. :P

Cheers,

Buckleboy

Re: NEVER THOUGHT I'D DIG ONE IN DENVER

Found a lot of American silver coins like that here, not quite so old though. The tab is something that has been on my wish list for years, maybe one of these days I can find something like that, but the quality of this one is just out of this world. Nice finds!

Re: NEVER THOUGHT I'D DIG ONE IN DENVER

Great Bust half. As far as cleaning the pull tab it is best to leave them alone. I hear cleaning them will devalue the resale price. ;D

Re: NEVER THOUGHT I'D DIG ONE IN DENVER

Hey Carl, that is one NICE half-dime 5C piece....especially for here in Colorado! TOO FEW and far between. As far as the Pull-Tab goes, I usually have mine Chrome Plated and then "Bling" em around my neck....

Re: NEVER THOUGHT I'D DIG ONE IN DENVER

Awsome Half Dime! I would be dancing too.
Hey, have you had the tab graded yet? Seems in great shape, would most likely be a good investment.
