I went to a spot which is right outside the French quarter in New Orleans and I went to the spot IMG_2037.webp
Unfortunately they had about 8 inches of fill so that was unfortunate, but directly across the street they were doing construction and it was fenced off I wanna walk up to the fence I could see hundreds of chard glass I mean it was everywhere so of course I’m thinking caviar dreams of silver so I caught one of the guys leaving and I asked him if I could Metal Detecting there he said sure knock yourself out. It was hard wasn’t as easy as I thought if I was looking for charred glass it would be easy even marbles I got a little figurine I got a 2 1/2 cent token which had no advertising just a 2 1/2. Then I start to clean what I thought was a piece of land and working it with my pencil it says ONE CENT Which would only be my second I have ever gotten in my five years my question to you is do I put a light electrolysis on it? I know it sounds crazy but I put a one cent That showed nothing so I had nothing to lose and it came out like thisimage-2021-05-13-21:15:12-228.webp

The question is is do I gamble on this piece or do I just do the best I can on cleaning it with my Andre crayon? Now I have ruined a lot of things trying to get a date I have to admit my record isn’t too well but I’m also a gambling man which is always been my downfall I have my face scanned at every casino we got down here so I can’t gamble anymore true story. It’s so evil out here in New Orleans LOL So this is what I found today I will first show you my ONE CENT image-2021-05-13-21:20:21-528.webp

image-2021-05-13-21:23:58-770.webp
Then I got something that I don’t know if it’s a marble or not it’s beautifulimage-2021-05-13-21:25:29-643.webp

Electrolysis will eat it up in a matter of minutes. There isn't much left to find on that coin.

Cool finds! Nice work on getting in before it’s all concrete, asphalt and fill dirt.

I'm certainly no preservation specialist. Were it mine , and I was going to keep it , I might toss it in a gentle/neutral p.h. light oil. I'd do as you are first though and seek out experienced conservationists of such a coin.

The crusty old copper coin I put in my mild electrolysis set up turned to what looks like sandstone. A lesson learned. (?) L.o.l..

Congrats on the site find , and recoveries made on it!

Good job Truth!

I never would have expected someone to give you the go ahead at that site! Well done!

Loosa boom boom roulette...
Boil and old laying hen, long time, and than when cool, rub some chicken grease on that coin and leave as is, half fill your cats bowl and take the rest of that bird down to the highway down wind of course and spread out along the dotted lines, usually over nite that skunk will be run over...

I’m from the wall in so I know how to do the talk I asked the black guy if I could swing my detector he says what is that though I told him it’s a white boy thing I like history he laughed and he said knock yourself out

Yeah I’m just lucky New Orleans has so much red tape to pay off the politicians to build something so it won’t be for a while

.....half bag of dry birds feed, spread along too symbolize just why did that chicken cross that road?

Well guys I have came to the conclusion of I’m going to leave it alone and officially make that my second one cent coin ever. They are so rare down here it’s crazy. I appreciate everybody’s looking I’m a happy man

Nice Find Truth!!! Congrats!!!

I just found out that Boulder as a marble It’s a Bennington marble 1880’s They were glazed and baked..

Its easier to ask and to know, than that nagging thought of I should of/could of later down the road.
Nice recoveries, liking the marble also.
Have you got a tumbler?

You beat me too it Truth, I was going to say, "nice Bennington Marble find". :laughing7:
The way I look at attempting to 'restore' any relic find with surface damage... if it doesn't turn out the way you want, then go find yourself another one.
Sometimes the environmental damage is just too extensive, so it's not your fault if the details don't come back.
The point here is that you took the initiative to find it, that's all that matters. :occasion14:

I love the 'Reclining Putti/Child', how did she clean up?

Doesn't look like that coin has too much on it, I'm afraid. I would still use the Andres Pencils though. Go slow, working in small circles. There are some really great videos on how to use them if you check YouTube.

Here's a Large Cent I found similar in condition to yours. I never got a date off it, but I used Andres Pencils and it's a prettier looking coin I think:

BEFORE ANDRES:

AFTER ANDRES:

I would definitely not use electrolysis on it. You're gonna zap more details *off* the coin than you would ever put on.
Whatever you decide, good luck!

I would leave the LC alone, your 2 1/2 token looks good, and yes, that's a marble. Very nice finds Truth.
