I went to a spot which is right outside the French quarter in New Orleans and I went to the spot IMG_2037.webp
Unfortunately they had about 8 inches of fill so that was unfortunate, but directly across the street they were doing construction and it was fenced off I wanna walk up to the fence I could see hundreds of chard glass I mean it was everywhere so of course I’m thinking caviar dreams of silver so I caught one of the guys leaving and I asked him if I could Metal Detecting there he said sure knock yourself out. It was hard wasn’t as easy as I thought if I was looking for charred glass it would be easy even marbles I got a little figurine I got a 2 1/2 cent token which had no advertising just a 2 1/2. Then I start to clean what I thought was a piece of land and working it with my pencil it says ONE CENT Which would only be my second I have ever gotten in my five years my question to you is do I put a light electrolysis on it? I know it sounds crazy but I put a one cent That showed nothing so I had nothing to lose and it came out like thisimage-2021-05-13-21:15:12-228.webp

The question is is do I gamble on this piece or do I just do the best I can on cleaning it with my Andre crayon? Now I have ruined a lot of things trying to get a date I have to admit my record isn’t too well but I’m also a gambling man which is always been my downfall I have my face scanned at every casino we got down here so I can’t gamble anymore true story. It’s so evil out here in New Orleans LOL So this is what I found today I will first show you my ONE CENT image-2021-05-13-21:20:21-528.webp

I also found this cute little thing just laying on the ground image-2021-05-13-21:23:48-015.webp
image-2021-05-13-21:23:58-770.webp
Then I got something that I don’t know if it’s a marble or not it’s beautifulimage-2021-05-13-21:25:29-643.webp
image-2021-05-13-21:26:06-065.webp
image-2021-05-13-21:26:49-769.webp
And tons of pieces of pottery like thisimage-2021-05-13-21:27:50-564.webp

My main question is what do I do about this MATRAN ONE CENT?? image-2021-05-13-21:31:29-445.webp

Doesn't look like that coin has too much on it, I'm afraid. I would still use the Andres Pencils though. Go slow, working in small circles. There are some really great videos on how to use them if you check YouTube.

Here's a Large Cent I found similar in condition to yours. I never got a date off it, but I used Andres Pencils and it's a prettier looking coin I think:

I would definitely not use electrolysis on it. You're gonna zap more details *off* the coin than you would ever put on.
Whatever you decide, good luck!

You did a great job on that Sakakka

You beat me too it Truth, I was going to say, "nice Bennington Marble find". :laughing7:
The way I look at attempting to 'restore' any relic find with surface damage... if it doesn't turn out the way you want, then go find yourself another one.
Sometimes the environmental damage is just too extensive, so it's not your fault if the details don't come back.
The point here is that you took the initiative to find it, that's all that matters. :occasion14:

I love the 'Reclining Putti/Child', how did she clean up?
Dave

The most beautiful marble I ever found. Thanks Antiquarian

Its easier to ask and to know, than that nagging thought of I should of/could of later down the road.
Nice recoveries, liking the marble also.
Have you got a tumbler?

No I had one and need to get another one

Nice! So the marble was hand-blown? Looks like it’s pontiled.

Truth - congratulations on your Large Cent! Right away I'll say that I think yours is in pretty good condition (all things considered), and your decision to leave it alone is a pretty good one.
I've been fortunate to find maybe 10 Large Cents up here in New Jersey, and I've always been happier with the ones I leave alone. When I've tried to restore some they've ended up disappointing me.

But, if you'd like to read about two coppers I tried to restore back in March, here are the two threads with a lot of pictures (and even a video in one of them). NOTE: I'm not an expert - I was just sharing my experience and asking for input from others.
You can be the judge if you read the threads, but I think I should have left the first one alone. As for the second one, it was so bad that there was nothing to lose with electrolysis (only through electrolysis was I able to read anything on it).
Because you can read One Cent on yours, I think you should leave it alone.
Sorry I'm late to the thread.

PS - I love how you describe your interactions with people down in Louisiana. I've never lived there and it's a great glimpse into life somewhere else in this great country of ours.

Nice Bennington. Congrats on the other finds too. Better get back there before it's too late. They won't let you near a construction site here in Pittsburgh. They are all fenced off and they won't let you on due to liability.

Congratulations on the nice finds. I think you made the right choice to leave the LC alone. I know it is in tough shape, but it is identifiable and still has some character to it. Nice you got permission for that site. I tried the same thing in a similar situation, but was denied. They said they could not risk the liability. Good luck there, and hope you can get some old silver.

Hey fistfulladirt you got it I have this marble thing is gonna turn into yet another addition. I’m amazed how a marble can be worth 1000’s of dollars PNG image.webp

Florida man I’m trying I’m beating the streets but I mad so good connections yesterday but my honey hole is getting real low. I getting closer to the Quarter old old ground. Thanks buddy

If you come hear don’t be surprised if someone strikes up a good conversation at the pump lol and we’re supposed to be racist but we get along great. For the most part everybody’s polite. I live outside New Orleans but it’s my home. I’ve wore my MAGA cap everywhere no one has ever even mentioned it. And the latte liberals are too scared to say anything anyway LOL IMG_1993.webp

Steve you’d be surprised what a case of beer can do down here. Lol

The workers told me when they leave and they’re like in the chain the leave it loose for me so I can get in. That’s what a case of beer can do and also there’s so much red tape in New Orleans that these builders have to go through nothings done fast out here you gotta grease those palms down here first.

A lot of my landowners get a case of beer.
