old button id's please.

Hi all.I found a couple of cool old buttons today at a housesite that dates from 1830 and was hopeing someone might be able to tell me what they are and anything else you can tell me about them.The one has a desighn with what looks like wolves heads and is a two piece button and the other is a one piece and has a horn and what looks like a guy holding two metaldetectors. I cant make out whats on the back but there is some type of desighn there as well.......Thanks y'all.

Good call!

Early 1800's Militia Rifles button. Looks like Albert's #RF 26. If so, the backmark might be "Imperial * Standard" or "Super Imperial Standard."

the horn is similar in design to that of the one used in the english "rifles regiment" sword hilt design of 1827 /45 era . -- so early 1800 time frame englishwould be my guess -- ( was a war of 1812 action or campground for troops in / near the area it was found ?)

Hi Ivan,No action or campsite that I know of.I found it in my buddys yard ( house was built in the 1830's) I also found a NY militia sword belt plate there last year.

Just for clarification...

Some buttons of this pattern were made for the U.S. market by British manufacturers, shortly before &/or after the War of 1812.

It is also true that British rifle regiments had similar hunting horn & trefoil/tassle devices on their buttons.

That said, the button posted at the top of this thread is a U.S. militia rifleman's button, and well documented as such. See pp. 79-80 of Record of American Uniform and Historical Buttons by Alphaeus H. Albert.

don't have the book myself ---so I was talking about the general design / style elements -- that it looked british made and of the early 1800 time frame off the top of my head. --thanks PBK for the 100% ID as usual -- ivan

Thanks pbk.Makes sence since I found the Ny militia buckle in the same yard.I'm guessing that someone that lived there was in the local militia.Thanks again to all that replied !
