Found this at the beach. It reads "Geo W Vanderbilt". (George W. Vanderbilt)

It is light and bends easily (lead?).

You are finding some interesting things of late. It must be a beach not used very much by people. Chances are you are finding some shipwreck items.

It keeps repeating his name. Could it be lead sheathing from an old wooden ship?

Ok, what you have my friend is a great find in my opinion. Mr. Vanderbilt was the mastermind of the great Biltmore estate located here in Asheville NC. I've been to the estate many times and your relic would most likely have great interest to the Family who runs the huge home as a tourist spot today. There are people here who collect anything related to Mr.Vanderbilt's endeavors. I have recently found a large milk bottle hunting near the estate fully intact. Mr. Biltmores vision was to build a self maintained establishement. He succeeded with the exception of going broke when he was alive. Mr. Biltmore had an early death when he died of TB which was common around here. Folks with the disease, fled here believing the fresh air of the mountains had healing effects. which was really not true. Today, the Biltmore thrives accomplishing what George intended to accomplish. "In the day" the estate had its own electricity source which was rare then.Mr Biltmores dream was to "own" everything he could see while looking out of his many windows of the mansion. No, but Geo. W. Vanderbilt's signature is all over them.

This is the label in the link above. The signatures also wrap around the thin metal that encases the top of the bottles too. I can't find a close up of them, but perhaps someone that is close to the winery would be kind enough to snap a photo of one.

I guess you dont drink much champagne. It is wrapped in Aluminum foil which, as you know, will set off a metal detector. Our beaches down south are full of foil trash. Look at the writing on the foil wrap. It says George W. Vanderbilt on a slant and it repeats. The saltwater environment will make finds appear much older than they really are. It is thin fragile aluminum foil from a wine bottle. No doubt about it. It couldnt be any older than mid-80's. Solved.

ADDED: BTW what is the size?
