Re: Unidentified old pictures

Big,

nice find you have there.

Old photos are hot items in some topics. Would think auto racing would be
one of those.

I'd start hitting the web and checking out all types of locations dealing with
the sport and old photos in general.

Could have a few bucks there if your looking to sell.

have a good un................

Re: Unidentified old pictures

Take a look at the personal cars in the background to get an idea of the date. I can't see them very well but they kind of look like late '40s or so to me. The newest model you see will be the earliest date the pic could have been taken.

Re: Unidentified old pictures

There is also accident pics. Could this be the old Indianapolis Speedway in the forties? I can't post any larger without going over limit. I wonder if Bill Holland drove car #21 or #16?

Re: Unidentified old pictures

Hmmm, you may have some interesting pictures there. As Vegas Bob pointed out i'm seeing he was an accomplished driver..

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bill Holland (born December 18, 1907, died May 20, 1984) was a American race car driver who won the Indianapolis 500 in 1949.
As the Indianapolis 500 was included in the Formula One World Championship from 1950 to 1960, he is credited with participation in 2 grands prix, debuting on May 30, 1950. He achieved 1 podium, and scored 6 championship points.

Filclips from 1948 and 1949
- A race edition of Jimmy Powers and his Press Box Favorites with a special Bill Holland feature! 1948 Duane Carter crash! Charlie Van Acker in #4 and Billy Devore in the 6-wheel Pat Clancy Special! Mauri Rose wins again! Then, in 1949, closeups of Bayliss Levrett's #69 and Nalon's #54 Novi before the race. More on the George Lynch wreck, plus Charlie Van Acker's crash! Duke Nalon's fiery crash and Joie Chitwood in action. Mauri Rose shown by his car on the backstretch, out of the race with a broken magneto strap! Bill Holland wins!

If you Google: Bill holland racing (or) indy there is a bunch to look at.

Re: Unidentified old pictures

Here is the pic of Bill Holland. All the other unidentified pics are someone's personal pics from the 30 cent bleacher seats (there is a sign) and in the pits.

Re: Unidentified old pictures

fleamistress, Thanks. I thought about that. If they are worth anything, I certainly don't mind giving them to Treasurenet, but i am also giving them to the entire internet world.

The bottom signed pic of Bill Holland is at Indianapolis Speedway. He is considered to be one of the best racing drivers of all time. The other pics are from another unidentified track in Indiana. If the very top pic is also Bill Holland it would be a? one-of-a-kind personal photograph; like the others. I need to know if he is car #21. Does anyone know the name of a track in Indiana in the 40's? I would like to? ID before I sell them on e-bay.

They might even be of some use to Indiana MDers. There might be something good under those bleachers! :D

Re: Unidentified old pictures

I'm lookin to see what car #'s bill drove. I'm not sure this may be all of it or not but this is what I find:

1949: Blue Crown Spark Plug Special (Bill Holland)
Car is part of a private collection last known to be owned by Robert "Buck" Boudeman. It appeared at the 1996 Goodwood Festival of Speed, and is a running condition. During the 1970s and 1980s, it was on display at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, Illinois. It had continued to be raced at Indy in 1950, and perhaps 1951. Car and driver identification from 1950-1951 is unconfirmed.

1947 #16 Blue Crown Spark Plug
1948 #2 Blue Crown Spark Plug
1949 #7 Blue Crown Spark Plug
1950 #3 Blue Crown Spark Plug
1953 #49 Crawford

No luck with #21 and there are a lot of race tracks in indiana... Holy smokes!

Re: Unidentified old pictures

Thanks for the research Wetgreenie, do they change car numbers every race or every year? I do see Blue Crown Spark Plug written on Bill Holland's Firestone car picture. I identified that pic to be at Indy. But the personal photos are too small to see the Blue Crown sponser. A sponser I see is "Perfect Circle".
I do have some #16 cars. The car on the trailer is #16 also. I wonder why these cars are different than Bill Holland's pictured car? The front of these old cars, in the photos, do not go past the front tires. I wonder if they are older or a different class?

Re: Unidentified old pictures

This is a very old post but I finally found out after 3 years what these old racing cars are. They are old Crosley Midgets. Check out the link. Scroll down.
With all the old papers and photographs I found a 1949 Crosley Service Manual but didnt make the connection until now when I googled it. I wonder if they have any value?

Re: Unidentified old pictures- RACE CARS IDed

Big Cy, I believe these were called "quarter-midgets" (the class). The photo of the track is definitely not Indy but it could be the old dirt track at IRP (Indianapolis Raceway Park) BEFORE it became IRP. This is not the same place that the "500" is held, it's actually a 1/4 mile drag track with the old dirt track all in one "complex". It could also be one of the hundreds of dirt tracks that were around back in the'40s, '50s and early '60s. As was previously stated by the others, to a serious collector, those pics could bring some nice money. Congrats...

Indeed it is the Offy. The other cars in the original pics at top are the quarter-midgets.

Hey Pip, was Deidt the builder or sponsor of that car?

I think Indy is only the one Holland pic. I dont remember how I came to that conclusion years ago. The others are photographs taken on a dirt track somewhere yet to be IDed. Thanks for your response.
