Our town recently purchased 150 acres of a peach orchard that had been in operation since the 1890's. I figured if they're charging me a couple hundred bucks more a year in taxes to pay for it, I'm going metal detecting.
Spent 1 1/2 hours today. Found a buffalo nickel, a few wheat pennies, some pieces of farm junk, and this sterling ring. It's quite unusual. Weighs 30 grams. the side and top emblems appear to be gold. What kind of ring is this? From what organization ? Definately will be going back again.

Think we could get a better photo of the emblem on face of ring?

Here's a picture of the crest. A peach picker musta lost it. it was found under one of the older trees.

Are my eyes playing tricks on me, or do I see the ending 4 letters spelling "kawn"? Is there an inscription on the bottom of the seal?

Red

yes, that is an inscription, but the bottom half is worn. all we can see is the tops of the letters. and inside the ring is only the word sterling.

Thats a cool ring. I would be wearing that on my finger!

Midas,

A crescent moon and star are both representative of Islam and the Turkic language people. The crescent moon is a renowned emblem of the Islamic faith. On the ring is also a mosque. My opinion, you've most likely found a religious item of Islamic faith.
All said however, keep in mind a lot of symbols that remind us of the Islamic faith span across Eurasia and not necessarily just the middle east.

What in the inscription can you make out, besides kawn?

Red

"kawn" meaning, literally, "existence." The
Perso-Arabic form, "dô kawn" translates as the "two existences" (a
translation into Persian of the Arabic dual noun, "kawnayn"), and
means "this world and the next" (= the present life and the
Hereafter). It is used a number of times by Rumi in his Dîvân and
Masnavi.

I also think that there is a city in Egypt called Kawn.....but this isnt Egyptian....

Those aren't sabres. They are scimitars. Everything on that ring just screams Islam! Maybe it is a Jihadi Terror School Graduation Ring! Some green pea, fresh out of terror school, sneaks over the border (Mexican) posing as an illegal immigrant named Juan. He takes odd jobs as a migrant worker (who pays attention to them anyway?), working his way across the US to a safehouse in Wherever, USA, to join up with his Jihadi Comrades in arms.

You, my friend Midas, may have just found the key to preventing 9/11/2006! Call DHS! Just kidding-nice ring(but that has put an idea into your head now, hasn't it?)!

On a serious note. What part of the country are you in? I live in SoCal, and haven't met too many Mexican Islamic Migrant Whatever Pickers! There are places along the border (I believe in Az) that are known for the large amounts of Arabs being smuggled into the US. I think it's called Arab Alley. You might want to check into it!

Gypsy,

Good find. I was finding "Khawn", but not kawn.
One thing to note, the architecture of the mosque minarets is Persian. Although Iran and Persia were once separate entities, they are synonymous today (depending on what side of the fence you talk to). Anywho, this ring seems to be Iranian/Persian or at least molded as such. I don't know a thing about jewelry, but I highly doubt something made there would state "sterling silver" on the inside. Also, the part that leads me to believe it's not authentic is that in the Islamic religion, it is against the rules to worship idols (the Knight , done so by portraying him on the ring) and to depict or draw them in art. So, who and why is the Knight on the ring. It can't be Mohammad. That is extremely against the rules and any one else would be idolatry. That part makes the least sense.

One last thing, then I'm done going crazy over this ring, but "khawn" can be transcribed into Brotherhood. Do the math on that. Is this a Muslim Brotherhood" ring? It would explain the knight depiction.

Beautiful Ring Midas.

My guess Orchards Are Excellent places to search.

I have Several Apple Orchards around here, and have wanted to Search them since the 70's.
No go :(

The Owners Seem to think if you dig into a root it will ruin the apples.

I used to Hire Myself out to help pick Apples in the Falls, and talked to alot of others that did the same. Watches & Neckless got snagged all the time. and who knows how many misplaced ladders fell with the
picker hanging on. and what fell out of their pockets into the tall grass.

If you can, Search every Square foot there.
I'd think there Must be alot more Gold to find.

Congrats !
Jeff

I've been wanting to hunt the local apple orchards around here, zillions of acres its seems!!! Every year the farmers take a section and tear them out, till it up and ready it to plant freash new trees. That's a good time to hit them up, I just haven't yet.
What the heck am I waiting for!!!!!!!

We have a lot of seasonal Mexican workers, I think I could find some interesting stuff!

Nice nice Ring!

That's right, there should be lots more stuff. The only drawback is the amount of land - 150 acres. It would take forever to cover it all. Well, we have a week of rain forecast (it's pouring right now), if there's a break in the rain, I'll be out hunting. Meanwhile, there's an old trail that was used up until 1899, when it was discontinued. Hopefully when I locate it, there won't be houses built on it.

I'm betting its an old Shriners ring. They have several "ranks" in the shriners, and this could be depicting one of them.
It is a heck of a nice ring!

Hi Midas. We have a lot of peach orchards here in Georgia, however we have very few Arabic Peach Orchards, or Arabic Peach Pickers for that matter. Here's what I suggest.......you send me that ring and I'll use it to compare with all of the other rings that I find detecting our Peach Orchards and when I find one like yours I'll send yours back. Okay? lol Seriously, great find!
