This looks like a young great horned owl. Just took this pic a moment ago. On the post across the road. Taken from my living room with IPhone hand held at 15X.

Owls are cool. Don't see 'em very often, but get to listen to them often, as one often roosts up outside my bedroom window.

Big time bunny killers around here. I just cleaned up a mess of bunny guts and pieces in the backyard a couple mornings ago from a night time owl kill. You know when they're around roosting in the day time because you can here the Blue Jay's harassing the heck out of them.

We had a rabbit problem 20 yrs ago. When I counted 17 rabbits in my yard I had to act. I put in a 15’ post with a solid T on top in the middle of my 2 acre pasture behind my house. It didn’t take long and I was seeing an owl perch there at sunset. The post is still there and rabbits are in check. I see hawks up there occasionally but it’s close enough to the house and dogs that they’re wary.

What an awesome idea that was...managing rodents by making a spot for their natural predators to hunt from.

Didn't seem to work for me, however. I've got 2 outdoor cats, raccoons wandering through on the regular, both day and night, and an owl that perches right over the area...and I still have to trap mice and the odd rat.

Had a motivational chat with both the cats and the 'coons after catching this BFF by the house..

A perch sounds like a good idea to make and install ! The squirrels and tearing up my tomatoes when they get ripe! I've tried and still use 1/4 inch screen BUT they still get my tomato's and I find the tomato's in my yard with one BIG chunk eaten out the middle of them and then left....Years back I built a 4 foot tall screened cage but then I couldn't get in very easy to get "my" tomato's ! I've put water out for the squirrels to drink but they really like my tomato's ! we even have tried certain types of plants around to keep them away but they keep on coming !

Chipmunks do that here w cherry tomatoes.
