Between the raindrops and the days off Don and I gained permission to do a couple of pits that inched closer in to the downtown area. In hopes of finding some older bottles and relics.
First pit was pretty difficult to find. First we dug a test hole and found it to be the well. Then we tested another spot which ended up being an oil barrel/ drum burried fairly deep. Then another small trashy area and finally I punched through an area right in the corner of the property and under the wooden privacy fence. So needless to say we had to tunnel just a bit
I hate doing that even a little just for the danger factor. But the ground felt stable enough to poke around with a longer handled shovel and out of harms way
So we were finding some broken pieces of bottles and some stuff that looked like a remodel job for the home. Some plaster and small square tiles. I figured it was when the owner finally got indoor plumbing so anything below that layer should be decent. Well it was for sure!
Found two identical Blob Beers, Charles W Krueger. I have found these in the past but they were just a bit different as far as the slug plate goes and the bottle maker. So I sold one and will give one to a co worker who's last name is Krueger
Don found a nice LH Thomas school ink and we gave that to the owner of the property for letting us dig! We finished up going about 4 feet past the fence line underground and thats all the farther we dared to go. But we did probe next to it and found another pit to do later
Then we got permission for the house just behind it. Felt a nice cap at about 5 and 1/2 feet where it punched through to a Use Layer
This pit was a bit huge by our usual standards. We found a shattered Pikes Peak flask in the first foot of turf?? But it was not to be that old. It turned out to be an 1880's pit. And it was fairly loaded. We found the nice milk glass meds and a nice fruit jar. Some real nice Gargling Oils and a Gilberts pain destroyer. The things that have us baffled are the 3 glass ornate knobs or curtain rod ends?? Maybe someone has seen these things before and have some insight on them. You can see in the pictures the thin layer of coal ash at about 3 feet and the the huge cap. Found a nice handful of glass buttons as well. So all in all it was a good day of a whole bunch of dirt slinging. We will go back and search for more and do the other pit we already located! So in the mean time be safe out there and goodluck on your next digs!
