I found this out in the fields behind my house a few weeks ago and I thought it was a KG III Half Penny. After looking at it more I realized it looked kinda' like a William III Half Penny too. I could be wrong, so here are some pics for comparison. Any thoughts.....?

The first comparison is to a KG III 1/2 Penny (1772-1773). You can see that the bottom of the busts on the front of the coins are different (They look different to me). The forehead and nose on the KG III is flat. The forehead/nose on my coin kinda' bubbles out like on the William III. My coins face has a hook nose. I have compared it to later mintage KG III's, the designs are different.

Here is a comparison to a William III Farthing. I think it more resembles TYPE 1 and TYPE 2. Is it? Or Does it look more like a KG III? The nose and forehead of my coin resemble the nose and forehead of the 2nd pic of the William III. Bubbled forehead and crooked/hook nose.

CLICK on pics a few times...they get REAL big.

Can someone please clear this up for me, hahahaha!! Something about the bottom of the bust and forehead/nose on my coin leads me to believe there is a slight chance it's a William III Half Penny.

I think it is a George III halfpenny. There are a LOT of different bust styles for them- many variations in addition to the example in your photo.

Thank you. I'm leaning more towards the KGIII as well due to the size. A William III Half Penny is closer to the size of a nickel...from what I have read. This is closer to the size of a LC. I'm still in my first year of detecting and trying to learn my coins.

Looks like a KG the III to me. Like Brablefind said, there were so many variations and counterfeits so there will be a lot of different ones.

Hi Cuz,
I'd say GIII only because it looks like a 'III' to right of forehead rather than 'Tertivs'
Worn details can often be seen better with some talcum powder rubbed on the coin,
and sometimes a pencil rubbing can help.
to my knowledge, farthings will always be around US nickel size, HPs will range 26-29mm.

(one exception would be the Rosa Americana series)
what's the diameter on this one ??

The diameter is just under 27 mm. Thanks Herbie!! I assumed it was a KG III when I found it, but some of the details look similar to a type 2 William III Half Penny. Big difference in coin size....
