Here are a couple of my favorites because they were definitely lost by soldiers in Brig Gen John Forbes army during his campaign of 1758 to take control of the Forks of the Ohio (Pittsburgh) from the French and Indians. An important Fort and battle site from that campaign are in my hometown (Ligonier PA). I have a large shoe buckle frag with the same pattern as the knee buckles and another large frag with this pattern is on display in the Fort Ligonier museum. These must have been issued to one of the regiments in the army. My shoe buckle and knee buckles were found at smaller campsites from the 1758 campaign.

Great thread! :icon_thumleft:

These are my favorites so far - batwing and batwing precursor (?) from my parents' house and a Knights Templar plate from my own backyard. ;D

My best Buckle is surely my large buckle Visigoths. is the larger than shown in the photo .... all others are medieval but centuries later than the 10th to 16th AC.
The Visigoths were a group of warriors of central Europe (the Romans called them barbarians = foreigners) very similar to the Saxons, who settled in Spain during the late Roman Empire in the fifth century AC
Here it is. :hello:

:o :o :o :o

Now that is something special. Which Museum (country will do)? Whats the story, eyes only on a field or deep digging

excellent craftsmanship, whats the pin that held the pin made of, if you get my drift?

I can see why it might be late Saxon but I have a gut feeling it will be 14th-15th Century (depending where it was found) :-\ This is the period that intregral buckle plates & rope-work design became popular, although there are exceptions to the rules 8)

Fingers-crossed :-\

The Museum of London has it, found eyes only, on the Tower of London foreshore, on the 2 days of the year that you are allowed there.

I only had the buckle for a few hours before the FLO wiped it away, so unsure what the pin is made from, my thought is it could be bone or ivory.

The FLO's initial thoughts were 14-15thC but when i spoke to her last she mentioned the earlier date, but she has not done any real work on it yet, i found a close comparison in ivory at Roxborough in the UK, and one in Europe, I am hopeing the Tower takes it for there collection

Wow Kuger, those are some nice buckles. Thanks for sharing. :icon_thumleft:

I found a Baby US buckle with the makers mark J.I. Pittman. Found it in 2009 3rd or 4th time out with my md talk about beginners luck. Thanks for looking Tex.

Found this in an area that produces finds around 1850-1900. Not for sure, but maybe it's from the same time period?

My favorite buckle is this Sterling silver "wreath" portion. I looked for the tongue but never found it.

Thanks Crusader,
When I originally posted it in a group photo, Someone, (probably you)
gave me the news about it being half an old Double Trapezoid.
Another relic from our earliest colonists here, I am currently searching for the 'Pannaway' site, never exactly located, I know the general area it stood.
THE first colony in NH. HH All
