I generally observe the rule about not wearing jewerly when detecting, but today I walked to the beach straight from work and forgot to leave my wedding band in my locker. I wasn't too concerned since I was planning on only wet sanding. After a very disappointing hour or so, I came upon a mom and her 5 year old son, who was very interested in what I was doing. I usually try to humor smaller kids when it's convenient, so I offered to let him try and he jumped at the chance. I walked him up to the edge of the wet sand, dug a hole, dropped my wedding band in and covered it. I put the phones on his head and told him to let me know when he knew where the ring was. He did, I had him mark the spot, and let him try to scoop it with my Beach Brute. While this was going on, Mom stood by with an appreciative look that said "Thanks for taking the time". After 3 kiddie sized scoops, I could see the ring on the side of his hole and I pointed it out to him. I was NOT prepared for what happened next. In one fluid motion, the little hellion grabbed the ring, ran the 20 feet to the waters edge and THREW IT IN THE SURF!!!!
I don't know why, maybe it's because I appreciate hellions having been one, but instead of getting mad I just strated laughing, almost to the point of falling over. Mom started crying and apologizing all over the place, while I just couldn't stop laughing. She thought I was nuts until I explained to her that my machine was designed to work underwater and I was "sure" I could find the ring quickly. I did in less that a minute and all was well. But while I was in the water, I couldn't resist the urge to yell to Mom that my wife is a professional wrestler, and if I don't find this ring we're both dead meat! I thought that was funny, but it only made Mom cry more hysterically. She was so upset the lifeguard came off his stand to investigate. And I couldn't stop laughing. Anyway, there's now about 50 tourists in Virginia Beach who are absolutely convinced that those geeky metal detector guys really ARE insane and it's best to keep your kids away from them...
