I may have gone to the school of Hard Knocks, again. I'll tell you the story and you guys tell me what you think. I went to the Jelly Jar Show yesterday. The first booth I stopped at the ladies (Grandma and granddaughter) had some CW cannon balls for $5.00 each. I picked out the best looking one and then, asked for the story behind them.

The grandma told us that her husband worked for the railroad. There was a train derailment, I believe she said in 1969. While he was helping clean up, he found a bunch of cannon balls. He researched it and found out that during the CW there was a train heading for Dayton, Ohio loaded with arms and ammunition for the Union Army that derailed. So that's what these are supposed to be from. I bought the one I picked out. When we were walking away, I told my sister-in-law that I wanted to buy all of them because I will probably never find anything CW related. She asked if I wanted to go back and get them. I told her we would wait until the end and if it was meant to be, they would be there. Must've been meant for me, I bought the remaining 6. So, now what? Clean them? How? Are they for real? How do I even begin to research?



Also, I bought this necklace and earrings from this other lady that takes the glass shards she finds from bottle digging and creates these jewelry pieces. I thought that was a good idea.

You got anyone you know well that works for the gemeinde? Or maybe your wife knows someone well. You are State or Federally funded/paid/protected correct. Just asking because it makes the process much faster, takes it down from the max of 90 days to about 2 weeks. Also are you directly in the main city or are you kreis, like in the near surrounding. Just asking so I get the proper info, if your in a dorf then some places require you start there and others require you go into the main.

But hey if it does not work; then just go to the ausländeramt and tell them you will take whatever Merkel is giving out today. LOL Sorry, could not resist.

Also Tom, I will be in Mainz, if I get some down time next weekend, if you like I could swing by and pick you up. I have a good spot near the Kaiserslautern area where the French and Germans threw down back in the day. I built both our canon ball pyramids from balls MDed out of there. The spot is not really worth much other than canon balls and old daggers. No serious stuff has ever been pulled from there; heck Mainz did not even want to touch it, said that many places where major battles happened are of no value.

Makes for good front porch home decor though. When we moved back state side we sold the house in Germany, many things I took down to our house in Italy. I could not resist it, I purchased to full size replica canon down there. If you been there I am sure you know the ones, only like 400 bucks each. Had to get two to set on the back porch there facing the beach.

My wife did not find out about it until this recent trip her and the kids made over to Itally to see me. She has been telling me know on those for so long. She saw them and said I went full on colonial white man, I just laughed and asked if she was the help and those are our four mixed kids. We always have good jokes for each other.

She said she never wanted me to have them because she thought someone would take them. I told her in this day and if Italian police saw someone with even a hint of tan walking down the street pushing or pulling one they would likely shoot the person and just keep driving.

So that's what these are supposed to be from.

Well, they seem pretty out-of-round to be new, unfired cannon balls......UNLESS when the original train derailed, that it also caught fire and softened the lead enough for the balls to become misshapen.

First thing I'd do is research the common sizes (diameters) of cannon balls used during the CW, then compare that to these balls. I doubt that will be conclusive as the balls are already so out-of-round.

They might also simply be someone who melted down some old fishing weights or lead from old car batteries and tried to make some homemade cannon balls.

All that said, depends on how much you paid as to whether you get another high score from the U of Hard Knocks. If you got 'em for a good price, you're ahead no matter what.

If you feel that these may be genuine, you might try to contact a university that has the means to do an analysis on the lead and see if the quality matches other known cannon balls of the CW. They'll have to take a sample from farther in, so would likely drill a small hole in one of the balls to get an unexposed sample. Then they could run it through a spectrometer and find out what all elements/contaminants are in the material. They could also remove outer material until they're down to the base metal, then run the spectrometer over that surface. Either way, they'll have to get past that initial contamination.
