All I have to say is gary is da man. He is a hell of a treasure hunter !! I have mad respect for him !!

Aye, so I'm a sorta new when it comes to metal detecting. I have my first big adventure planned for the lake Erie beach for the next 3-4 weeks straight! If anybody has ever gone detecting there, perhaps you could lend a tip or two to a greenie? I mean, most of you all are in the states so it's probably a long shot, but I figured I'd leave my message somewhere where it'd be found. I have spent about 8 hours in my own back yard testing my detector for the different kinds of signals so I got that somewhat down pat.

I personally have never detected Erie... but perhaps someone here has.

Well I'm based in Canada, however, I pretty much only do land detecting. When I was at the Radioworld hunt in Toronto I had a chat with a couple of the top waters hunters around. They have great success because they don't leave much behind trash or otherwise.

I'd probably just knock out small iron and dig everything else for best results.

Yeah Gary knows his stuff and has great success and a pretty down to earth guy also. But he'll be out on the beach with a head lamp in the middle of the night when others are sleeping so he pays his dues and then some.

Well at $5.00 each CW or not you got a good deal. As to how to clean I'd stick with the pros, ie; Tom or if he's not around track down Cannonballguy I'm sure either one can give you the best method of cleaning and restoring.

I may have gone to the school of Hard Knocks, again. I'll tell you the story and you guys tell me what you think. I went to the Jelly Jar Show yesterday. The first booth I stopped at the ladies (Grandma and granddaughter) had some CW cannon balls for $5.00 each. I picked out the best looking one and then, asked for the story behind them.

The grandma told us that her husband worked for the railroad. There was a train derailment, I believe she said in 1969. While he was helping clean up, he found a bunch of cannon balls. He researched it and found out that during the CW there was a train heading for Dayton, Ohio loaded with arms and ammunition for the Union Army that derailed. So that's what these are supposed to be from. I bought the one I picked out. When we were walking away, I told my sister-in-law that I wanted to buy all of them because I will probably never find anything CW related. She asked if I wanted to go back and get them. I told her we would wait until the end and if it was meant to be, they would be there. Must've been meant for me, I bought the remaining 6. So, now what? Clean them? How? Are they for real? How do I even begin to research?

Also, I bought this necklace and earrings from this other lady that takes the glass shards she finds from bottle digging and creates these jewelry pieces. I thought that was a good idea.

If you're talking about FB well like you I have mixed feelings. I'm on there primarily because of the Canadian forum and rarely post much and nothing to personal.

Just to give you an insight on how intrusive those kind of sites can be I was talking to one of our members who has a channel on youtube and post videos. I had mentioned that odds are since Nugget Noggin is a good looking young guy probably about half his subscribers are women. Well according to our member youtube breaks down subscribers in different ways for you including male/female ratios.

Her channel on detecting is 8% female and 92% male which is probably pretty close to the ratio of detectorists gender wise; since I would have guessed about 10% women. So even though a lot of people don't necessarily put their gender down when creating an account, it's pretty obvious they construct a profile on you based on internet activity. Food for thought.
