Folks,

Got back late last night from the Toronto group hunt. We had about 250 people for the hunt so a great success I'll try to post up a few pictures this evening.

starting to clean up some stuff. Raining hard right now, and blowing like the devil. The buckle came from a civil war site on sullivans island. I dont believe that its from that time period though. The small chain and charm are some kind of sorority jewelry and are plated silver. The chain was fouled in the toy helicopter and took forever to untangle. It was unbroken, so probably a swimmer came back to the towel and picked it up to dry off and forgot about the jewelry that they removed and left on the towel before there swim. Ive seen this scenario play out with my own eyes while detecting. The ring I found yesterday at a cape may new jersey beach. Its silver with a copper wash and then gold plated.


Supposed to hook up with a guy I met last night and hunt a dump site today, but the weather is not cooperating very well. Ring is marked elizabeth w.

Well, they seem pretty out-of-round to be new, unfired cannon balls......UNLESS when the original train derailed, that it also caught fire and softened the lead enough for the balls to become misshapen.

First thing I'd do is research the common sizes (diameters) of cannon balls used during the CW, then compare that to these balls. I doubt that will be conclusive as the balls are already so out-of-round.

They might also simply be someone who melted down some old fishing weights or lead from old car batteries and tried to make some homemade cannon balls.

All that said, depends on how much you paid as to whether you get another high score from the U of Hard Knocks. If you got 'em for a good price, you're ahead no matter what.

If you feel that these may be genuine, you might try to contact a university that has the means to do an analysis on the lead and see if the quality matches other known cannon balls of the CW. They'll have to take a sample from farther in, so would likely drill a small hole in one of the balls to get an unexposed sample. Then they could run it through a spectrometer and find out what all elements/contaminants are in the material. They could also remove outer material until they're down to the base metal, then run the spectrometer over that surface. Either way, they'll have to get past that initial contamination.

Cannon balls were never lead.

I only have an excal on this boat. No land machine. But the excal is not bad for land either. Worked okay for me in beaufort. Sucker is heavy though. Got tennis elbow from yesterday.

If you remember, I said “be careful what you ask for.” Now you have a woman that doesn’t know what she’s talking about. I called them “cannon balls “ because that’s what the ladies selling them said they were. So take me to school.







That’s the best one and the worst one. There’s corrosion but it’s not the orange/brown that I am used to. It’s more like brown/black.
