Smokey and my other buddy had a great day yesterday digging at our site in Virginia. Finally the farmer harvested his soy bean fields after a 7 month hiatus of the field being off limits the hunt was on.
Mind you, we’ve been hitting this civil war site since 2010, but with almost 500 acres it’s impossible to search every square inch of this area. I dug a few flat buttons, 2.5 civil war thimbles, a heel plate and part of a bayonet scabbard tip. But the find of the day for me was digging a perfect 72 locked on ID on my XP Deus and dug a nice plug at about 4 inches down. Popping the plug I was looking at the back of 2 piece jacket or coat button and was thinking another general service eagle button as I had dug a nice eagle “C” Calvary button this past spring. After picking the button up I turn red it over and was looking to see an eagle which I did not; within seconds a faint script letter appeared-then my brain kicked in-I had just dug my first script I infantry button. Reading the backmark Smokey informed I had dug a good button: LONDON CSA Isaac Campbell Co.
This is my first Reb button with Deus that I have only been using for 11 months; thanks to Smokey, I ponied up and bought this beast. The XP Deus by far the best machine I have ever owned and is a killer on brass! . Can’t wait to go back and dig more stuff next Saturday Smokey!
