Silver @ face and other keepers log

Nice...glad you found something and a 90% half is a good chunk of silver.

I have six boxes rolling in this week. I hope to finish march strong. Keep on rolling.

Good luck with your six boxes. I'll probably only get 2 more half boxes and one or two nickel boxes before the end of the month. If I can find any more silver by the end of the month I'll be happy. Today is the 83rd day of the year and I've found 87 silver keepers so far this year so I'm still keeping my one silver or more per day average this year. I'd also like to see if I can increase my volume a little more later this year and try and search $100,000 in halves this year. But I'm not sure about that just yet.

I've gotten boxes with 2 different styles of wrapping in them too, as long as they produce silver I'm happy. Haha

More skunks this week. But I did find another clad '76S in my last half box. Its kinda strange I've been finding so many '76S coins this year - 4 clad and 2 silver (one half and one Ike). So now I've only found one 40% out of my last 10 half boxes. And I have one more half box to p/u Monday to finish off the month. I also got a nickel box for the wknd - I hope I can find at least one silver in there. Sure hope I can start getting some better boxes next month. But even with my lousy last 10 boxes I've still found 63 silver keepers out of my 25 half boxes so far this year which is a 2.52 per box average so I can't complain about that.

3/25:
$.50 loose half: clad
$50 mwr & cwr nickels: skunk (just a '39 and 9 other pre-'60 non-silver Jeff's)

3/27:
$500 (String) half box #25 - skunk (just a '76S clad and several other NIFC)

Btw, today is the 87th day of the year and I've found 87 silver coins so far this year so I now have an exact I silver coin per day average for 2014. But that means I need to keep finding silver soon to keep my one or more silver coin per day average for 2014.

H$H!

Well, I had a good nickel box to finish off the month - 2 silver and 1 full date '36 buffalo. I also found a '39(P) ender, an unusual 2012 Twenty Pence coin of unknown origin and two off center strike coins - the best one is a 2000P. I also found 2 more wheat cents at one of my coin counters when I was dumping some coins on Friday. I should have one more half box to p/u on Monday to finish off the month. Today (3-30-14) is the 89th day of the year and I've now found 89 silver keepers ytd. It's kinda strange how I manage to keep that 1 per day average lol.

3/28:
$.50 loose half: clad
$100 (String) nickel box:

  • '36 full date buffalo
  • '43P & '45D
  • 2 x '39(P) (1 ender)
  • 14 x '40-'49 (non-silver)
  • 28 x '51-'59
  • 4 x 2009P & 2 x 2009D
  • 2 off center strikes ('84P & '00P)
  • 2012 Twenty Pence coin of unknown origin

Free coins:
2 wheat's found at coin counter ('36 & '40)

A bit of silver to end the month. Good luck in April.

Well today was pretty typical for me in regards to how my luck has been lately. I had another skunk half box but I still managed to find a silver keeper to keep my one silver per day average for the year. So on the 90th day of the year I found my 90th silver keeper of the year. As I mentioned on another thread today I found one 40% silver half (coin near the center of the roll in 3rd pic) in 7 cwr's that had a lot of other unusual silver edged looking clad halves. Those were definitely coins with tricky edges that required date checking. It was like someone was playing an early April fools silver joke on me lol. Oh well, I only found one silver but as the saying goes - one's better than nothing.

3/31:
$70 cwr halves:
'67 (10th coin from the right in roll in last pic)
$500 (String) half box #26: skunk

Good luck to everyone next month.

Tough break with the toned coins, but it's cool that you are still on target for the year.

Well, I had a decent month in March. There was 31 days in March and I found exactly 31 sliver keepers. And as of 3/31 I have found a total of 90 silver keepers for the year. Its kinda strange how I am keeping to my goal of one silver or better per day average so closely.

March 2014 Totals:

Cents:

2 free wheats ('36 & '40) found at a coin counter

Nickels:
4 silver (2 x '43P, 44P & 45D)
'36 buffalo
'39S

Halves:
3 x 90% (2 x '64 Ken's, '44 Walker)
24 x 40% (including a '76S)

So as I said, as of 3/31 I've found a total of 90 silver keepers in 2014 which is exactly a one silver keeper per day average so far this year. But I'll have to start finding silver again soon to keep up that one sliver or better per day average lol. Hope we all have a good CRHing month in April.

Btw, it was 3 years ago this month in April of 2011 that I scored 4 Morgan dollars from a bank including a low (330,000) mintage 1899 Morgan (pic's below) that I'd guess to be in about F condition. Because of the 3 year anniversary of me finding it and since that's the single most valuable coin I've ever found at fv I decided to change that coin to my avatar this month.

H$H!

Well, Im off to a slow start this month. My first half box for April was just another skunk. But I did find a '28 buffalo earlier this week. And I plan on getting a nickel box for the wknd so hopefully I can find at least one or two good keepers in there.

4/1:
$2 loose halves: clad
$50 (String) mwr nickels: partial date '28 buffalo, '39, '41, 3 x '50's, 2 x '09P, '96 Jamaican $5 coin

4/3:
$.50 loose half: clad
$500 (String) half box #27: skunk (just 4 clad proofs - '71S, '86S, '00S, '01S and a two other NIFC's)

I'm glad your nickels keep giving up some keepers during your half box skunk streak. Keep on rolling!

Well, I finished off the week with some interesting finds. On the way home from work on Friday I got 12 U.S. Mint wrapped P & D half dollar rolls from 2001-2006. I also got a nickel box that produced my first '05P bison detached leg error coin I've ever found. And at the very end of the box in the sixth roll from the end I found my first silver for the month of April - a '43P war nickel. :)

4/4/14:
$120 mwr halves: 12 uncirculated U.S. Mint rolls: 2001P & 2001D
.....................................................................2002P & 2002D
.....................................................................2003P & 2003D
.....................................................................2004P & 2004D (2 rolls from each mint)
.....................................................................2006P & 2006D

$100 (String) nickel box: '39, '43P, 14 x '40's (non-silver), 11 x '50's, '05P bison detached leg error, '05P bison obv. lamination error, 2 x '09P, '77 Canadian, 3 minor off center strike errors

I have at least one half dollar box to p/u on Monday 4/7. And one of tellers at the bank I got the nickel box from on Friday is supposed to have some half dollar and dollar coin rolls (?) but that teller was off Friday so Im going to check back with that bank on Monday also. I've had pretty good luck at this bank in the past so I'm hoping to get lucky there again on Monday.

we'll be waiting for the results!

Slow going but at least your having fun and finding some cool stuff. Nice find on the chopped leg bison.

Yeah the silver has sure slowed down for me lately but I've been finding some other interesting stuff. And Im a little curious about the cwr halves that teller has from the bank I was at on Friday. The last time I got cwr's from this bank on Jan 3rd of this year I got 6 40% from 15 rolls and I've had pretty good luck with customer halves from this bank in years past too. But my best scores usually seem to happen when I least expect it so Im not getting my hopes up. U just never know with this hobby. :)

Well, not much silver again this week but as I already posted on another thread I did manage to find my first silver commem - an 1893 Columbian Expo in the very last roll of a box I got on Thursday which sure was a nice surprise. And in that same box I also found an interesting 2000P grease error that's missing the T in LIBERTY and the IN in IN GOD WE TRUST. And I skunked out on $150 in nickels I got earlier in the week but on Sat 4/12 I got $20 in mwr nickels and found a really nice condition '40s (small s) w/ steps and a '43P at the end of the very last roll which was another nice surprise.

A week in review:

4/7:
$5 loose halves: clad
$500 (String) half box #28: skunk (just 6 clad proofs -'71S, '72S, '77S, '81S, '84S, '88S, '87D a few other NIFC's)
$100 (String) nickel box: skunk (9 x 40's, 10 x '50's, 2 x '09P, 2 x '09D, '66 foreign coin of unknown origin)

4/8:
$1.50 halves: clad
$18 dollars: 1 SBA & 17 clad Ikes
$10 cwr & $40 mwr nickels: skunk (just 6 x '40's including a '46 ender, 4 x '50's)

4/10:
$.50 half dollar: clad
$500 (String) half box #29: '67, '68D, 1893 Columbian Expo commem, 2000P strike thru grease error

4/11:
$500 half box #30: skunk (just a proof like '89D)

4/12:
$20 mwr nickels: '39, '40s (small s) XF w/steps, '43P, 2 x '50's, '98P off center strike

So Ive now found a total of 95 silver keepers in 2014 and from the 30 half boxes I've searched so far this year I've found 66 silver keepers which gives me a 2.2 keeper per box average. So even with the mostly skunk boxes I've been getting the past 5 weeks or so that's still a pretty good average so I sure cant complain. And I have another half box to p/u on Monday from the same bank I found that '93 Columbia Expo so maybe I find some more interesting keepers in that box too. :)

H$H!

Nice variety of finds this week. And great average on the halves! Is there much value in off-center nickel strikes like yours? I've seen a few about like that one but always throw them back in.

Thanks. Yeah another week of assorted keepers. And yeah a 2.2 keeper average with my half boxes so far this year isn't too bad. Im not really sure about the value of an off center strike nickel like this one - probably not too much. I've seen some really cool off center strikes that are more extreme than this one sell for pretty good money on ebay. I keep the off center strikes and strike thru grease errors I find in a plastic container. Im kinda curious about that strike thru grease error half dollar I found this week. I don't remember ever finding a half dollar missing letters like that. I find those types of errors occasionally on nickels though. Yeah I bet with all the nickels you've been searching u find errors too. If u find anything more extreme than the one I found this week its probably worth keeping.

Good luck to both of us with our nickel hunting the rest of the year!

Well its sure nice finding some silver in my half boxes again. I found 2 x 40% and a 90% silver commem in a half box on Thursday and in my half box today I found 2 x 40% and a 90% '35S Walker. The Walker has some light scratches on the obverse but its pretty minor and Im sure not complaining. That's now my third Walker of the year. And all three keepers today were in the last 6 rolls of the box. I like it when the best finds are at the end of the hunt. So Im now up to a total of 98 silver keepers for 2014. I should have a couple of more half boxes this week so hopefully I can find my 100th silver keeper before the week is through. :)

4/14:
$500 (String flat) half box #31: '35S Walker, '65, '68D, clad '96S, '89P strike thru grease error

Great finds, SF! I've yet to find a half older than a '64. Can't wait to find my first Franklin, Walker or Barber!
