One of the things I like to do is go through the boxes of old photo's found in antique stores. I came across a bunch that had old shots of Washington DC and some were handwritten with a blue ink pen with some info of the photo and a few with the date June 1943. This 5-1/4" x 4" B&W photo is handwritten on the back, "Science Research Lab Anacostia D.C. Movie Stars etc.(no info as to who these people are). I would say the tall fellow 4th from the left-back-row is Jimmy Stewart, but that's just my opinion for now. As for the other people or so called movie stars in the photo, I've no clue just who they are?... I would say the photo was out of a personal collection that someone took of a trip to Washington D.C. in 1943. I also purchsed other photo I liked of D.C. from the collection.

Per your request...Photo's seem to be typical tourist shots. I gave a sepia tone on them as it may highlight the pic's for show, or so it seems to me....Note: Last picture of buildings says just Greenbelt, Md on the reverse same handwriting I believe?

For your entertainment and education: pic #1 is the 1200 block of 'F' Street looking east from the corner of 13th & F; pic #2 is the south-east end of the Tidal Basin Inlet Bridge (built 1908) looking north; Pic #3 is obvious; pic #4 is row houses at Greenbelt built in '41 to help ease the dramatic housing shortage in the DC area. Greenbelt was founded as a planned community during FDR's New Deal era along with two other "green" towns - Greenhills, Ohio & Greendale, Wisconsin.

I STILL think the guy in the middle is Secretary of the Navy Frank Knox:

View attachment 914302

He is the guy with the biggest reason to be at the reasearch lab as he was the boss. And he was a big political player in DC at the time and would not pass up this kind of photo opportunity.
I agree! It looks like Knox, plus he would be in the building from which the photo was taken if the info on the back is correct.

Thanks for your computer wizardry, Breezie.

I concede that it's gotta be Gene Raymond based on the height factor. John Payne was 6'-2", Jean Hersholt was 5'-11", and Gene Raymond was 5'-81/2."

Otay Buckwheats, here's the latest and greatest. If you're happy and you know it, say, Amen! :laughing7:

I 'think' I've tagged via the majority's request, if not, let me know.

Hey Breezie,

I suggest we've got one too many Wayne Morrises in the picture. I nominate the just plain "Wayne" to be, in actuality, Conrad Thibault.

I think the other Wayne Morris is William Holden. He and Brenda Marshall were married in 1941 and if you look at the two newspaper photos from the event they are together in both of them.

Yeppers we have a winner on William Holden, which I've updated on the above photo. I've changed so many names, I didn't realize I had 2 Wayne Morris.:laughing7:

Now we have to figure out who 'baldy' is.

I sent email to a ventriloquist dummy collector/historian to see if he can ID the creepy looking dummy in the lower right corner or recognize the bald guy. I'll post if he sends anything back to me.

Baldy could be anybody. I thought he might be a famous band leader or musician but didn't find a match. He seems to have that same "I can't believe I'm here" grin on his face as Frank Knox.

I researched to see if he was one of Frank's "people". Turns out Frank Knox's assistant was Adlai Stevenson. He is a bald guy but I don't think it's him.

Not sure what else we can do...

Nope! I'd take em off and have a dumfounded goofball big huge smile :tongue3: After that I'd kiss the person who was good enough to have a camera on hand to capture that moment of me in the presents of those beauties and say to myself, if I were Knox, "Dang it's good to be a Big Shot".

OMG check this out!

I thought I'd take one more stab at baldy and found this:

Andre Kostelanetz had a popular radio show in the early 40's. His wife was singer Lily Pons - the girl with eyes closed.

The other guy in this pic is Nino Martini - famous tenor of the day.

Done!

One last thing. I think the Edward Arnold guy is actually Nino Martini. OK. I'm done now.

This thread was SO much fun!

Wait; don't do it yet. I'm thinking the Danny Thomas guy could be Nino Martini and Eddy Arnold is Eddy Arnold. Let's do some comparison pics.

The only prob I'm having with
Andre Kostelanetz vs. Baldy is Andre has a 'light bulb' shaped head where as Baldy's head is more ovate. But the pic below of Andre looks a hellavah lot like Baldy. So here's my take after Matt's work:

Baldy is Andre
Sleeping Lady Michel Morgan is Lily Pons
Danny Thomas is
Nino Martini
What do you think?

Good research Matt!
