Tanner and I have been wondering what other strategies other Coin Roll Hunters use. Please share yours.

Ours is basic: We search 2 boxes of halves a week from the bank that I have my family and business bank accounts at. We live near Metro Detroit so there are plenty of banks within the area. We have never done a road trip just to hunt coins. Often when I have an errand to do, I leave 15 minutes early so I will have time to stop at some banks along the way (We are not a fans of Credit Unions). When I do stop at a random bank I always ask for $3, $5 or $10 in cents. (for the Wheat Wars) I will then follow up with, "Do you have any half dollar coins, either loose or in rolls?" I will also suggest that they ask other tellers.

In 4 years, I have only opened one extra account because of CRH. That was at a bank with coin counting machines and a number of local branches. We have only run into another CRH twice in four years. My job regularly takes me around the state of MI and OH. During down time on these jobs I often am able to visit a lot of banks. We occasionally find silver in Coins Stars (about 3 times a year). There is also a local gas station with cheap gas in town, they take in a lot of coins. When ever I buy gas they will sell me there extra rolls. We average about 2 silver coins a month from there.

We have never sold any coins (except some pre 1960 nickles on Craigs List). They are all safe in safety deposit boxes. We are saving it all for a trip to New Zealand.

This has been a great inexpensive hobby. I think we have only spent money on a magnifying glass, a dozen Whitman books, and a bunch of used clear plastic coin holders.

We would love to here the srtategies of other Coin Roll Hunters. Please share your strategies.

Keep on Searching
Dad and Tanner

Mine is take all silver in the area, and whatever is not silver, I paint silver so others can find those.

Depending on my schedule I have a standing order with my bank for 4 boxes of halves each week. I will do 1 -4 depending on how busy I am. I will also ask for CWR's of halves dimes and pennies. I have 3 other branches I will ask for CWR's. The local convience store I have educated the girls working to keep an eye out as I will buy anything they find. 2.00 dimes, 5.00 per quarter, 5.00 per 40%, 10.00 per 90% half, 20.00 per dollar coin.

When out of town I will check the banks in the area of my hotel for halves.

Volume. I aim for 30 boxes of halves a week. Dump in bags for cash. Kiss lots of tellers' asses. Don't tell them what I'm doing besides the fact I'm a collector. If they mention silver, I ask if they keep it... if they do, I hand them my business card and let them know I'm a cash buyer at very good prices that beat every local dealer. No store = No overhead = more for everybody.

I road trip with frequency, pretty much every chance I get. My typical weekday off (I get one per week) involves me hitting up 20+ banks. Most of the tellers around here know me by name, know what I do, and put everything they get from customers aside for me.

My other goals (yearly) are a silver dime per day from boxes/bags and a war nickel every other day from boxes/bags. I gun for 500oz a year.
