SOLVED! Ambrotype Photo Civil War Militia Member Georgia

Any military guys here that can identify who these two are fighting for? I am going to be really embarrassed if it is the US.

Even with a loupe I can't make out the first letter on the hat of the first guy. It's either "D" "O" or "Q" (I think). The second letter appears to be a "U".

The first one could be German/Prussian and the second looks like Confederate officer or calvary.
Or both. Note the sword.

I love em. Both are Civil War. The upper one looks to be New York Militia. What are the initials on the hat? The other is the south. I love em. Nice stuff.

I've seen the other opinions about the first photo, but I have to disagree, because that sure looks like a Georgia State Seal hat-plate to me.

I'm not at all into old photos ...but I'll see what I can find out for you.

Thanks for all comments. I got these two in a large bunch of old photos. The two soldiers seemed to be the most interesting. There are several other tin types, and a bunch on thick paper that are mostly portraits of uncomfortable looking women and men with wild facial hair. There is also a stack of photos that appear to be from the south during the early 20th Century.

I can't make out any initials on the belt plate of either. There is a gold paint-like substance that highlights the first pic in a few places. Also on the first pic, the first letter is now looking like a backwards "G"?

If it is a G V it could be Georgia Volunteers. Those uniforms date in the 1830's and into the CW. The other image is probably Mississippi. Nice stuff. Bill

My guess they are both American. The shako may be pre civil war. Im just guessing though. Either way a great find.

Upon further examination with the jewelers loupe, the symbol on the hat in the first pic above the wreath is the arches of the State Seal of Georgia.

God, now I am really embarrassed. Not only is he Confederate, he's from my home state... I feel like a real doofus now...

Thanks for the heads up.

The locking case/frame they are both in has become separated at the seam. Should I look into having them restored? I think a sticky piece of fabric would do the trick of holding both sides together. Also, the bottom pic has a piece missing from the base of the frame as well. I know a guy who runs a frame shop - could he be of service, or should I just leave them the way they are?
