Hey RiverNomad, I do indeed think it is possible that you have a "Wakan Tool" either pressure flaker or etching depending on the wear at the beak. A wakan is loosely interpreted as a spirit. Sioux and many tribes thought that everything had a spirit. Though what you have is not a huge work of art, is was not suppose to be art, it was to help the tool impart the wakan of "bird" One way to tell that you are not seeing clowns in the clouds so to speak, and seeing an effigy spirit tool is check opposite the eye for another eye, it should be close to symetrical to the first one. Use a bright light at an angle while tilting the tool back and forth. Usually one of the eyes or both will have what looks like sunrays around the upper half. Also, there is many times a base, or polished area that allows it to sit in a manner that is condusive to seeing the shape and eye, but not always depending on size, if it is a finger tool or if it is to be attached to a handle. In the future when you find an out of place rock, right away see if it has a base type area set the rock down on the base and then look for an eye spot where it should be. The way I see yours is there is a nice twist that was pecked out and I bet the curve fits your fingers and your thumb perfectly with the beak sticking out to do the work. This shape is so you can optimize all of your hand pressure and not just your forefinger and thumb. This ingenious feature avoids fatigue. How do I know? I have many many very similar to what you have and actually use some. Also, it has gotten to the point that one can be buried in dirt except for the eye and very top of the head and I know to grab it cause it is going to be a tool. Happened again tonight even though I was looking for points. Good Luck, and what they do not want you to know is where ever you found that, go back to the same spot and rub around...should be some burins, flakes, broken points, cores, and perhaps a knife blade or two. Good Luck!
