What's new

This post is NOT political/NOT religion!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Dont make it that.

I think the word "Conservation" indicates CHANGE; for MD'ing/TH'ing... it started with Teddy Roosevelt.

I'm all for conservation. National Parks must have restrictions placed upon them, but there has to be some semblance of balance here. We now have protected areas outside of the park system whereby we can look but not touch. I'm not saying we should harm our natural environment. I'd be the last person to suggest that, believe me. But increasingly just the land itself is subject to restrictions of access that are not reasonable. Heck I remember hiking all over England - the farmers had actually built steps over their fences for hikers to use. People didn't do harm - they just wanted to explore.

Yes, the old times were better, if you didn't get polio, diphtheria, smallpox, consumption, or die in childbirth.

There was a LOT more decent Human Conduct back then too,not like today.

But first you had to survive long enough. Not everyone did. Life expectancy was a lot lower.

My father had a quadruple bypass at 78.....he is now 84 and going stronger than me and very very active, mows lawns for people gets his deer every year/rabbit hunts ...just 20 years ago he woulda been left to die.

Progress comes with a price..... just that some see it as too costly and hate change for the sake of just being hateful about everything around them.

Not everyone does today either.

Expectancy is longer, times are more violent.

Instead of dying from consumption or polio, many die from beatings, starvation, captive torture ... and that's just on the streets of some U.S. cities.

Change for the sake of change is what got us to that point.

Not all change is good and not all change is bad. Why is that so difficult to understand for some folks ?

I am sorry but I don't know anyone who has died from beatings, or torture or starvation. However both my grandfathers marrie twice because both their first wives died in childbirth; my last relative to die in childbirth was only in the 1960s. TB ran through both sides of my family; many families were left to struggle because of the early death of the breadwinner. My own father died a year ago, in his mid-90s. No one else in his family had got near such an age. I am in my late 50s and have already lived longer than most of my ancestors.

Sure, life expectancy is higher nowadays EXCEPT did any of you ever hear about someone dying of cancer in the 1950's?
In the last 10 years, wayyy too many people I've personally known have died from cancer. No age limits either....Young or old....cancer strikes.
And what about diabetes? There's insane amounts of sugar in everything now.
Obesity? How many people even exercise these days?
Please..... someone point out to me how we've "evolved" in the last 50 years. I'd like to know.

Cancer is more common now because other diseases are no longer killers. Perhaps my grandmothers would have died of cancer if they hadn't died in childbirth first. The sugar part is easy, don't eat processed food or sugary drinks.

I fail to see your logic Smithbrown. You're saying the reason no one heard of cancer in those days is because they died of something else first? :icon_scratch:
Looking back at my family history, other than my grandmother loosing one baby, no one died of anything other than old age.
Yep, one uncle who had polio. He walked with a limp his whole life is still alive and kicking today.
Yet now there's 20 year old kids dying of cancer. Are you saying this is normal and they would have died sooner 60 years ago of something else?
This is the 1950's we're talking about not medieval times. Lol.

I still believe being raised in the 50's and 60's were so much better than today. I was the neighbor engineer. I made slingshots, bows & arrows, skateboards, go-carts and rubber band guns. Now you can't even point a finger at someone.... that's some change I can do without. And I made money throughout my neighborhood as a young boy by actually working... I always had money and NOBODY gave it to me. And the work I did was done with pride as I do yet today. My grandchildren do the bare minimum when given a chore. I believe their following societies lead today. The same standards and means by which I made money as a child still apply today. Since I retired at age 49 in 2006 I can easily make an extra $200 to $500.00 per week by just "playing" in the woodshop having fun when I want as a hobby. Hell with a little investment I could build a larger barn... hire 3-4 folks and make some real money. But then all the rules I despise would apply. I'll share when I want to.... my way.

And the point is... there would be people who would WANT and EXPECT me to pay taxes and redistribute my money / work to others.... As a child it was admired but today not so.... Hate this kind of change.

That's exactly what I am saying- what's so difficult to understand? Well, I told you my father died in his 90s. He was the survivor of three bothers. One died as a baby, the other in his 20s. So, yes, not good odds in my family; I lost a 2 year old neice only 30 years ago to leukemia. Childhood used to be a very dangerous age to get through- if you got past 10, you had a good chance to getting to some sort of old age.
As to the cancer, I would guess the prevalence of smoking in the last century does account for quite a lot of the deaths.

Because we used to emphasize individual liberty AND individual responsibility. Both have been eroded and spread to a collective. When people blame and accept that society is the fault for individual's actions we have less people willing to accept responsibility and more people feeling that it's society's role to govern the individual.

My life is GREAT!!!!! Sorry for everyones who isn't. I don't want to be you...

America was great because America was good,it is sad I see not an awful lot of Principles or Values these days.
Dark days are coming guaranteed. Strange a lot of folks think things are getting better!

Sorry you weren't taught about slavery, the Indian Wars, WWI, WWII and many even worse historical events. Teachers probably too busy trying to convince you change is your only hope for a better life.

.... They lied.

I agree. I also know that our lives, regardless of the direction of society are still our own to make. The individual ruggedness and self reliance that made America great still apply and we are still responsible (whether we or society want to recognize it or not) for our own fate, our standard of living and happiness. These are determined by choices WE make. As society changes, to maintain these may take more resolve and additional work but luckily we still live in greatest nation on earth that offers more opportunities than any other nation... ever .. By a long shot! MERICA!!
