V sign on stones surrounding a tree

Found a thorn tree surrounded with stones which have got a v mark on them. I have cleared the stones surrounding the tree and uprooted the tree, dug 2 metres and did not find anything.Kindly advise

... go to a local nursery this spring and purchase a native fruit tree like wild plum. Read up on how to plant and than do it. Give it some minimal care and in a few years after you harvest a five gallon bucket full of fruit, mark it down as a lesson rewarded....

Do love those wild cherry plums.
I'm guessing one would have to fill in a meter of dirt before they planted the tree
