War of 1812 Button WOW! Check out the "AFTER" Picture!!

I got out for a couple hours yesterday to my new favorite field...same field I found the two old shoe buckles the past couple weeks. I stuck to a part of the field I hadn't hunted before and didn't have very high hopes for...high in the field and close to the road. The first target was a first for me and something I've been looking for since I started detecting. Ramrod guide. Nothing special I know but I love digging musket parts and this is one that can now be crossed off the list. Second target was just a couple feet from the ramrod guide and was a War of 1812 Royal Fusiliers 7th Regiment of Foot officer's button...another one to cross off the list. It's actually in much better condition than the pictures show. Lot's of other targets but these two stand out!

Sweet! I think the ground is getting borderline frozen up this way. Spring cant come soon enough!

Re: War of 1812 Button and a First

I just noticed that there is a Roman numeral "V" engraved on the ramrod pipe. I've seen others that have been found also with Roman numerals engraved on them...any idea what these numerals represent?

I'll get a better shot tomorrow...it's been cleaned but my camera is giving me issues. I'll snap a couple at work.

The ones I have dug all have markings like this as well. I'm puzzled by the marks too, and last time I asked that question no one else on the forum knew either. :icon_scratch:

They appear to either be either hash marks/adjustment marks or Roman numerals that might indicate the size or cal. of the gun?

Perhaps one of us should start a Whatzit thread and folks can add photos of their ramrod channels with hash marks.

Excellent Finds, and a Great Post from you.

Best Wishes,

Buckles

That's a killer button Romeo and ramrod guides are always nice to find, especially the cast brass ones (versus the sheet brass rolled ones)

The few I have dug have them as well.We also note many of the cast buckles we dig have them.As so far its not really known what those markings denote?

It is odd how simple items elude some of the most hardcore diggers.Mine was the Jews Harp, everybody seems to dig them and they have been dug just feet from me,but i just recently was able excavate my first
