Weapon detectors in banks

I went to a bank about two weeks ago in Grand Rapids that I had never been to before to look for halves, and they had some kind of metal detector/scanner that you had to walk through to get in the bank. Apparently after you walk through it, if you set it off someone has to buzz you into the bank? I have never seen this before in a bank. Is this something that is common in other areas?

There's one bank near me that has doors like that, no two actually.

I've seen them at a Fifth Third as well. I definitely set it off with a dump bag of halves.

I belong to a credit union that has this kind of security, otherwise the other banks and credit unions in metro detroit have no such detectors.

Some banks have bullet proof glass, many don't. Some have a security guard many don't.

One of the biggest factors is the proximity of the bank to a freeway ramp. The closest a bank is to a freeway the bigger the target.

As far as I know, you are not supposed to bring a firearm inside of a bank. I always stow mine in the car when I do pickups and dumps. Missouri law does not allow a firearm in schools, hospitals, college, banks or government owned buildings such as court houses, DMV etc.

Quite common out here in Southern California. Also even more common are thick plexiglass partitions that keep you separated from the tellers. When I need to dump or pickup at one of these banks, I have to go to the merchant teller line and use their pass-through box.

Yeah, they have been common in So Cal for at least 2 Decades in many parts of San Bernardino Count. I have seen nothing like it out here in the mid west.

I carry whenever I am in public places, most people I know do as well. In Florida, you can have a weapon in your car as long as the "Three Step Rule" is observed and you do not need a permit to do so. We have alot of retired LEO's in our area from other states, they all carry for the most part.

Florida has the "Stand Your Ground" law and the "Castle Doctrine".

An armed society is a polite society.

I also have access to a weapon in several different places throughout the house as well, all concealed from view but easily accessible
if needed. Hell, I have even carried (in plain view), when I was outside cutting the lawn or just working on the house. You never know what is going to happen nor when it will happen. I tend to live by the rule, "Better to have and not need then to need and not have".

I've never seen anything like that around my area. I have a defibrillator/pace maker so I wonder how I could even enter this bank.

I have been to concerts and amusement parks that had the walk-through detectors but easily went around while being felt-up and hand searched for contraband. Interesting.

In Michigan you can bring your gun into a bank. Our CPL (concealed pistol liscense) does not limit banks, as long as their is no sign saying No weapons allowed

The bank down the block from my grandmothers house in puerto rico had this. It was the only time I've seen it, & the area is not too bad or sketchy, I just figured they liked to rob banks there.

CanadianGuy: I can understand why you doubt it, your experience is Canada. Gun Laws and Rights in the US are much different. I would hope that you investigate the CCW laws in the US state of Iowa before you openly doubt a statement I make about my own experiences.

My state, IA, does not forbid CCW in banks and to be quite frank I can think of no place on earth where one would be better served by being legally armed than in a bank. I don't mean to dispute you thinking I'm a nutcase. Being a bleeding heart liberal that is for loose weapons laws qualifies me as one. However because banks are easily in the top 2 or 3 targets for criminals, and a guy carrying 60 pounds of coins is an easy target, I CC my little girl everywhere I carry coin.

I live in AL and it's a open carry state. You don't need a permit to openly carry a firearm, at first the bank tellers looked at me odd but now they don't even give me a second glance. I always carry my 1911 openly on my hip, and if a bank was not concerned with my safety and wanted me to disarm before entering, I would be changing banks.

My banker and my preacher both tell me to carry my firearm when I come into their establishment. The holster and ammo belt are a real conversation starter. JP
