Hi all,

This morning I found out my son (who is in middle school) got straight A's on his report card..I kept my side of the bargain and gave him a small cash reward. He then told me he had enough saved for a little guitar amplifier he's been wanting, so we headed off to our favorite music store and ordered it.

Over the past couple of months I've mentioned the "guitar fund" in some of my posts, and the support I received from you all since then was truly appreciated. Some of you have known for awhile that I wanted to buy myself "a present" with all the clad I've found this year, something I could use and at the same time share a neat story on how the present came to be. It clearly represents the two pasttimes in my life that mean the most to me..my music (that came first at age 14) and my metal detecting, which I began in high school, then quit and started again 13 years ago.

Anyway, after we ordered my son's amp, we went into a room full of acoustic guitars. I saw the one I've had my eye on for about a year now. This particular model isn't in the same league as my Ovation acoustic-electric or my U.S. Stratocaster, but it looked gorgeous and sounded incredible for the price.

Since the last week of December, I've dug up, cleaned, rolled and swapped coins for cash, saving the money it in an envelope until today..I finally dug enough to pay for the sucker so I called the store and made a cash offer for the guitar. My offer was accepted, so with cash in hand, my son and I high-tailed it back to the store, where the guitar was waiting for me. They even threw in a new set of strings  I'll have to dig up another hundred bucks so I could buy a case for it..until then it goes back in the box they gave me after I'm done playing.

My son was kind enough to take the following pics..here's me with the cash before we left

Here is the guitar itself taken out of the box when we got home

And here's me with my new present

Hey Nat that guitar is a beaut, if it sounds just half as good it looks I would love to hear it. Can you play for us on Youtube.
Straight A's, OUTSTANDING!

:D My VERY first thought when I read your post, Nat! ;D How 'bout a little Sweet Home Alabama? All you'd need now would be a jar to hold the tips! You'd have that case in no time at all! ;D

Way to go! GREAT pictures too!

Nana

Thanks Nana, you know I've never tried to put anything on Youtube and I don't even know if I know how (I'm really showing my computer ignorance now :-[) My son's friend's mom has done it before so maybe I'll ask her to help me do a number..and what a coincidence, Sweet Home Alabama holds a special significance to me..it's the first song I ever learned to play!

Thank you MUD and everyone else for the great compliments, it really means alot to me.

Hello Nat--The--Man!
Cool story; cool guitar, and I love how you spread the wealth around!

Not many know this here but I love writing song lyrics! I've got too many to write about here. Maybe one day I'll be inspired to write a metal detecting one although it's really not my type. They're easy! :)

Now that's what I call TREASURE! Priceless moments with your son and a slammin new guitar for all your hard work! Hunting, squatting, digging, cleaning and rolling coins is hard, and now you're reaping the benefits! You go man! My cheeks hurt from smiling over this story. ;D Sounds like a scene from Wayne's World........"OH yes, She will be mine!"

Love it......Love it!

nice mo-man! hope you don't mind i call you that. tell your son, GREAT JOB!

nice guitar! Epiphones are made by Gibson using the same construction methods the Gibson guitars are made with. some of them are really nice. if it sounds and plays as nice as it looks, you got a winner with that one! congrats!

Thanks to another AWESOME treasure hunter! That pretty much sums it up..glad I didn't do it all at once or I'd be dead now ;D And I laughed out loud when you mentioned that movie as I'm all too familiar with it! Do you take CASH?? Cha-ching!! And I was careful to heed the sign in the music store.."NO STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN"! ;D :D

Good stuff! Clad does add up. I paid for my bugerking meal the other day with dug money and I don't think the kid working the register was to thrilled .LOL He kept looking at all the black dimes to make sure they were not pennies. ;D

AWESOME Natman

Maybe a drum kit next ??? :icon_scratch: ???
WTG !!

Funny story! Once I brought some coins to the bank out of the roll and although they were rinsed off, they looked kinda cruddy. I remember the older lady teller saying.."Well these are no good.." I felt like saying, "It says E Pluribus Unum, doesn't it??" :D She ended up taking them, but since then I've been tumbling all my clad.

Now don't tempt me Derek.. ;D What I really want to get next is the case for that model..I don't want to see her getting scratched up anytime soon!

Natman If you wouldn't mind me asking ,what do you use in the tumbler to clean up the clad?

Not at all..here's what I do:

I fill the tumbler no more than 1/3 full of coins..then enough water to just cover them..then an equal amount of lemon juice..then a squirt of dishwashing soap. I let them tumble for about 2 hours. AI also separate the pennies from the rest of the other clad or they'll end up with a brown residue.

There are other cleaning recipes as well but that works for me pretty good..some people use aquarium gravel but I haven't tried it.

Way To grow Nat! you made me smile today thanks

Nat, Glad to see that the big day finally arrived. Good for you!

Looks like your son can yield a pretty good camera too. :icon_sunny:

At the rate you bring in clad, it shouldn't take you too long to get a case for that guitar. Now get out there and do it. :D

Thanks, my son also took 2 photos for a book I wrote about detecting, which I'm going to have published later in the year..he seems to have a good eye for it..and yes I'm going to try digging up more for a case..the clad is just coming in a little at a time now..I need to find more virgin turf so I don't have to go back to the same spots I've already hit over and over.
