Sound advice. I would find it impossible to turn away my family, but I think my neighbors would be a problem. They seem friendly now, but during a real emergency (where people are dying or could die), I think my neighbors would be a danger to me and mine. Secrecy is the key - don't tell ANYBODY what you're doing because even loved ones can slip up and tell a friend...who tells somebody else, etc. The less said, the better.

Just caught a great old episode of The Twilight Zone the other night dealing with just such a situation.

I can only imagine it was written sometime in the Cold War era (but I could be way off there), and it concerned a large block party during which the warning sirens went off. There was a mad dash as everyone left for their respective homes to seek shelter, but the family hosting the party had prepared and just ran down and locked themselves inside their bomb shelter. The rest of the neighborhood, realizing that they had no place to hide, ganged up on the first prepared family, begging, pleading, threatening them to be let into their shelter. Of course, there just wasn't enough room, oxygen or supplies. Eventually the mob rips off the door to the shelter, dooming them all.....had the warning not been simply a test of the system. Of course all of the friendships were immediately reexamined after the incident, and it became apparent who was really friends with whom.

Two things I have not seen on here yet that are survival foods and not many people are aware they are edible are
cattails and porkypines. The porkies are available in the Eastern forrests, but not sure how far West they are. They
are easily killed and skinned. They have a strong woodsey flavor and taste better if soaked for a while in strong
saltwater. I was raised on them but if lost in the woods and need to survive, you skip the salt-water soaking.

Also, the cattails will do to survive on if there is nothing else. You pull them straight up and eat the white root
which is like a pulp. It does not have a good flavor, but if you are hungry it will save your life. And you have to
pull alot of it as the white pulpy stuff is only about 4 or 5 inches long and only about as thick as a pencil. I have
eaten them as a kid, but only to familerize myself on how to do it.

Growing up in the woods in the Upper Penninsula, I knew of other things for survival also, but that was way back.

TT, I saw one of his shows. Taken on Goose River four miles from Happy Valley.He had a survival gun and hunted, you don't crunch through the snow hunting there, ptarmigan can hear, you have to be silent and still like a deer. That river is full of char, they are great. He ended up eating some of his old dog meat. Those guys eat bugs, grubs and worms and rotten bird eggs. I hunted and fished there in 1949.Happy Valley is a town now, the last time I was there was in 51 and the Eskimos had started settling down. I got near the village and a dog sled appeared out of nowhere and almost run over me, if I hadn't took a dive into a snowbank it would have. My job was to install a direction finder in a shack 1 mile south of where he did his show, I still like to watch them for the scenery he is a great camera man . I'll bet that dude can find better food than he shows, as much time as he has spent scrounging. Gnewt PS That was Labrador

Just a fan of the show. That episode really stood out in my mind for some reason, though.

Storm lanterns (Very cheap), with some oil (When you run out you can use oil from the meat fat you cook to make candles, so keep a ball of string for that) Another ball of string to make a trip wire warning system (NO BELL TYPE DEVICES), just run the string back to your hide out, leave some slack, and hang a card on it. Someone trips it, the card moves up, and you´re warned. Wire saws, and snare wire for cutting trees quietly, and snaring rabbits and hares.

They are usually so internally "confused" the odds of them actually getting their act together to pull off something like this is almost zero!! It is right up there with Area 51... the Gov't inventing AIDS and all this other nonsense... just my personal opinion... you know.. the Gov't is "us".. just normal people just like us trying to do their job... no more... no less... you should always stock up and be prepared.. but more for things like natural disasters.. not some non existant Gov't conspiracy...

I wouldn´t say Chem Trails are a Government Conspiracy, more like big business avoiding the costs of getting it disposed of properly !! They then have more profit for the company, which means a bigger bonus for the bosses, and screw the public and the workers.

Monkey Boy, appreciate your opinion and your thoughts, that's what it's all about! But getting a hit means nothing. You actually have to read the data. As far as them being us goes, it looks good on paper. Believe me they are not us. Did you know that there is actually an entire, functional government with a president, vice president, sec of defence, etc. that works every day. That it is a second government in place just in case our first one is destroyed? Did you know that there was at one time life on Mars? Did you know that the gov. and now the banks buy stock just to make sure that the market stays up? And chem trails are real! I also know several people who have been in area 51. It also exists. And yes they are all doing their job! That is my openion. And I really do like hearing your opinion!

TT, sounds to me like you are right! I especially agree on being prepaired and never needing the stuff, then being unprepared and not having it when needed.

Ray really did have a good idea of leaving small caches at various locations.

Maybe a 5 gallon plastic pail buried here or there.

Stock it with various things you like and normally use.

Then you can rotate the stock from time to time.

A whole bunch of stuff no one will eat unless they are starving is not a good choice.

Not sure where most folks here live but here in Oregon there are a lot of forested areas where such stashes could be made.
Miles from the nearest roads if need be. 5 gal buckets sound like a good idea.
Petrified twinkies or ding dongs do not a meal make.
A geocached supply bucket sounds neat. Include .22 ammo as it is cheap and can be found with a MD if you forget exactly where it is.
If someone with the initials BO gets elected firearms and ammo may become hard to get.
Vitamins and first aid supplies of course. Maybe a patch kit for when the ice cap melts and most of the world is underwater.
Put your stash at least 500' above the now known sea level.

TT you never really own your home.
Even if the lender is paid, the Gov. wants yearly taxes for what it may be worth.
They can add up and require forclosure eventually.
Maybe if you set up a fund to deal with this it might work, but the fund could go bust.

Get subsidies from state and federal gov. agencies .
Let them pay you!

This topic really made me think. I always thought there would be plenty of deer if things got crazy but everyone else in my rural area has guns and those deer would be gone in a hurry. Makes me want to get a couple goats. I think I will! They're good company and don't taste too bad either.
