What might this abbreviation mean on a map?

An 1861 map I have of my area has several dots labeled as "BSS" (you can see two in this example). Comparison to other maps shows that at least one of them matches up to a school on an 1871 map of the same area. At the same time though, schools are very obviously marked as SCHOOLHOUSE or SCHOOL on the same 1861 map. Is the BSS abbreviation of any significance?

If it reads BBS, I agree with Gene the Machine; Black Smith Shop;sometimes shown as BSSh.
