What's Your Best Find In Your Own Yard?

I keep seeing threads from people finding cool coins and relics in their own yard. I've only actually detected mine once, and I did find a musket ball. I can't even tell you how many times I've driven over an hour somewhere to detect and come up empty handed, atht's why I get such a kick out of seeing people find good fings in their own yards.

Cast iron handle to lift the round metal plates off a wood burning stove.

A 1908 "V" nickel. My oldest coin and favorite find so far. I also found a copper print plate with a water scene (an Egret with cat tails and lily pads). This stuff was found UNDER a house I was renting an apartment out of. It was nasty under there, but well worth the effort!

I have detected my yard many times and found coins every time. I live in a small town and I now own and live in the house where I grew up (so I know the yard very well). The house is not that old (built in 1953) but for quite a while my oldest coin find came from my own yard ... a 1908 Barber dime. I also found my first jewelry find in my yard ... a silver ID bracelet.

A 1942 Jamaican cent (about the size of a quarter) in my front yard..wonder how that got there?

I also found 3 silver Rosies from the 1950's, old redline Hot Wheels and Topper Johnny Lightning cars, wheat pennies, and 2 dog collar tags from 1962 and 1970.

My wife had a custom ring made for me one Christmas and it went missing. I had it replaced and then years later I find it in the front yard while testing a new detector.

A silver plated spoon ring and a 1960's matchbox car with all the wheels!

Re: What's Your Best Find In Your Own Yard?

About $3 on the very first day I got my detector. My house is 'only' 30 years old.
I still have the money in a zip-lock somewhere! Can't beat your first!

Have fun,

Eh, all I found in the yard was a couple quarters at the most... not too much history in that yard.

Re: What's Your Best Find In Your Own Yard?

I found a white gold diamond engagement/wedding ring (the two fused together). This was in the 1980's, soon after I had bought my house. A neighbor saw me detecting my yard and told me the ring had been lost there, so I knew what I was looking for. Since we knew who had lost it, we tracked the girl down and she gave me $20 for finding it. ;D

I live on an old river bank that was used heavily for sending logs to the mill and also my property had an old fishing resort on it...so our finds have been pretty cool...Cheyenne dug a cant hook and several logging items out of a hole she has been digging out of for over a year now, old bottles, jewelry ,pottery shards and lots of old fishing tackle. We dug a six inch cast iron fry pan and a small gold ring with a topaz in it this last summer. When the girls get bored they hit the back yard. Heck I do too.

Re: What's Your Best Find In Your Own Yard?

My best yard finds aren't worth a nickel all totaled. But to me they are invaluable. They are a series of those little die cast cars made by the toy companies that were popular back in the 70s and 80s. My youngest son Jeff use to play out in the yard with his best buddy Bryan and those cars were always lined up with motors revving. ;) Some of those darn little cars were 6" deep and heaven knows how they sank that far into the ground over the years. I showed them to my son and Bryan who are both grown men now and they really got a kick out of them and both exclaimed they remembered certain models. Bryan was always a little short fat kid, but now he is 6'7" and goes about 300 lbs. While my son Jeff was the biggest and strongest as kids and now he is 5'7 and weighs in at 190, although a body builder so he isn't fat. As they say in the TV ads, "Priceless!" Monty

Out of a lengthy list, I'll select an 1893 Indian head penny.

How cool..what a feeling that must have been to unexpectedly pull that up.
