Why so many 64's?

Mind you, I'm not complaining, because I'm just looking for melt, but I'm amazed at the amount of silvers that turn out to be 64's. A friend suggested that a lot of people can't remember if 64 was the last year of silver or the first of clad, but that doesn't make sense to me as clad is very visible.

I assume you are talking about the Kennedy half dollars. The reason there are so many 64 half dollars was that the govt minted them into 1965. I think it was the middle of 1965 before they stopped minting the 90% half dollar & started minting the 40% 1965 half dollar. The chart that Joe777Cool found from Wikipedia explains everything. Outside of the 1970 halfs the 1965 was the least amount of the 40% silver half minted while the 1964 half was the 2nd most half minted. It was very close to the 1st most minted half which was the 1971. Both of them had over 430 Million minted.

Close. The '64 half dollar was minted until April '66. The mintage figures for Philly '64 halves is 144,182,000 in '65 and 41,674,000 in '66. Mintage figures for Denver '64 halves is 41,793,838 in '65.

To address the other denominations, there was a bill that was passed in '64 to address a coin shortage. The date would be frozen and permitted the production of coinage with that date until the shortage was alleviated as determined by the Treasury. '64 quarters were struck until January '66. And '64 quarters were struck until February '66. I don't have any mintage figures for nickles and cents.

I think he meant half dollars because in his thread he mentioned that people couldn't remember which was the last year of silver & the first year of clad. We usually call half dollars clad even though quarters & dimes are the Johnson clad funny money also. That's why I posted as I did.
